It's a complete dead rubber - we could win all five of our remaining games 5-0 and it would barely be enough for anyone to notice.
Personally, I think football should try and avoid those situations as much as possible. That was the merit in the 8-8-8 proposal. I don't see any merit, whatsoever, in making the league bigger - especially to the 14 team idea that St Mirren back (or at least say they do - and we know they don't seem to be capable of telling the truth). In a 14 team SPL the bottom 8 would have to play these dead rubber matches for the best part of 4 months.”
These matches in the bottom six are no more dead than loads of matches in different leagues with 5 games remaining, and it is not usual for one team to be so adrift as Dundee this season ( who were only in the SPL at all in unusual circumstances ). At least there was real competition till the 33 game point to get into the top 6. Not every league is as competitive as the English Championship.
I actually would prefer the two 12s just to split as the current SPL does rather than the 8/8/8 proposals. Then one automatic promotion / relegation place and a play-off among the 2nd bottom in tier 1 and 2nd to 4th in tier 2. The second bottom play-off place in itself would in most years add more competitiveness to the bottom 6 after the split.
The 8/8/8 potentially adds midseason non competitiveness or at least one team not being bothered. Might as well rest up your players for the post split once you are sure that you are not going to finish in the top 8, since your points are wiped anyway.
