Is anyone using the back plate you need to wirelessly charge their device? If so, does it still work if you've got the phone in a case? I want to get a kit from ebay but it's pretty useless to me if it doesn't work through a case. I kinda think it wont work...

Also do you think many retailers will start using NFC payments soon?

I was thinking big companies like Tesco etc might do it 1st & just wondered if anyone here had heard any interesting rumours.

happy new year

Contactless mobile payments using a mobile phone with NFC and a built in app is only currently available to customers of Barclaycard and Orange. Barclaycard also offer paytag, a sticker with a built in NFC chip which you place on the back of your phone to non Orange customers.

As for personal payments, the paypal app now suports NFC.

Contactless payments using a card is available with many banks now including Barclay's and HSBC.

Is this because nobody else has adopted it yet or because they have some sort of licence to use it like EE got to use 4G 1st?

Are we years away from being able to put our phone on a pad at a supermarket to make a payment?

Uptake in next 6-12 months should improve (other banks are rolling out ie RBS/Natwest) and yes case still allows wireless charging at least on the Nokia 920 so in theory it should be ok. Also a Case is unlikely to affect NFC 'reception'

Depends on the case.
NFC only works over a very small distance, so the thickness of the case can be an issue. Also, if there's any metal in the case that gets in the way, that would definitely interfere.

No, we already can.

M&S and Aldi use contactless card systems in their stores and I'm sure it won't be long before the other big names roll it out too.

As above, you can only get the Barclaycard app on Orange but others will follow soon I'm sure (banks and CC companies).
