Sunday Dinner - chicken breast
Mad Hatter
30-12-2012
I usually chuck sliced onion on the base of my slow cooker and on top a sealed chicken breast with thinly sliced potato, carrots and peas, bit of stuffing, oxo and salt and pepper. I leave it on for ages, probably about 7 hours.

Today I decided to cook this meal on top in a saucepan with lid, on the lowest light. I had seen my elderly neighbour cooking joints of meat in this fashion but never done it myself.

Anyway, it was on for about 1hr 10mins, I used the stock to add to some gravy granules and I served it up with a dollop of cranberry sauce. It was absolutely delicious and the chicken melted in my mouth. Maybe I could have cooked it for less time, I dont know. It is so easy not to bother cooking for one but I do try and make the effort.

1h 10m sounds way too long for 1 chicken breast, even for a slow cooker. On the hob you could poach/steam it in less than half that time.

I usually cook the chicken breast plus veg in the slow cooker for about "7 hours" on a low setting - I leave it such a long time to be sure it is cooked and I hate taking the lid off because doing that, it loses the heat.

It was on the hob for 1hr 10mins. If I dont get my meal in the slow cooker early, I end up eating rather late and dont want to eat too late. Degsyhufc, how long would you cook the meal on the hob?

sliced potato will cook pretty fast. 1 chicken breast shouldn't take more than 15 mins to poach/steam.

Oh eck, I cooked it far too long then! Thanks for the info.

Trial and error. Size of chicken, amount of other veg, temp cooked at. There'll be tons of different ways to cook it and stick to what you find best.
