SOOTY - Matthew Corbett - Alive/Dead/Ill ???

Does anyone know, is Matthew Corbett (of Sooty fame) alive, dead or ill?? Having scanned the internet there seems to be a difference of opinion on the matter.
One site suggests he retired because of Leukemia another because he just wanted to spend time with his family. I've also read that he can't make a come back on the Sooty Show because he's too ill.

Does anyone really know the truth?

Didn't his son get the rights to the bear and won't let his dad do it any more?

Thats a pretty extreme step to take if you have an embarrasing dad. Buy the rights and make them stop.

Errrrr ... No ... Harry Corbett did it originally. Retired after a heart attack I believe... Matthew took over then retired handing it on to Richard Cadell who still does it. Matthew's son got arrested for being in possession of E at med school ... but never went near the rear of a half stuffed bear.

Thanks for the info .. Don't think the bear and the brush are related at all though.... well apart from both being icons of childrens tv in the 'good old days' Seem to recall Basil's operator had a rather shady past ..

More to the point, how's Sooty? Last time I watched, the poor little sod had lost his voice and couldn't say a word.

Matthew retired because of all of those reasons.

He hand-picked Richard Cadell to take over from him and its been nearly eight years since this has happen.

You can see the new Sooty series on the CITV Channel every Sundays at 2pm

The last time i checked a new series is being planned.

And you can check out my Sooty website which has just passed 100,000 hits here.

I am almost certain that Matthew Corbett retired because he had been diagnosed with leukaemia. Sooty celebrated fifty years in showbusiness (not bad for a bear who has always lied about his age - he's always claimed to be five years old) in 1998 and Matthew retired in the same year.

ITV did a documentary about it with Matthew saying that he was retiring at the end of the 1998 series.

When Chris Tarrant appeared as a guest on Room 101, he wanted to put Sooty into there.

Yes, Matthews children didn't want to take over Sooty so he went outside of the family to find someone.

However the transfer from Harry to Matthew wasn't entirely straight forward. Harry gave it up due to ill-health and handed over to Matthew who performed Sooty on TV and on stage. But then Harry recovered, got itchy feet and started touring with Sooty too! Matthew had to take action (don't think it got as far as the courts) against his father to stop him.

I'm sure Matthew could do something like a guest role around Sooty's 60th Year in 2008.

And not forget the new series of Sooty with Richard Cadell is on the CITV Channel every Sundays at 2pm

I always used to watch Sooty years ago but I think they've ruined it with the newer series - it doesn't resemble anything like it once was.

I presume that Matthew recovered OK from leukaemia, and he also had Raynaud's disease (which affects the circulation in your hands) so I suppose that's why he had to quit.

That is going to be a bit difficult. We will have to take Paul Merton's word for it. Gonna be like a monologue.
