Does anyone know of any current/latest and upcoming phones that have a D-Pad.

D-Pad = Arrow keys/buttons i.e.

Very unlikely to find that now on any mainstream phone - some of the ones targeted towards older folks and those with impaired movement may but apart from that I think you will be out of luck.

An 'old ' HTC desire has an optical trackball which does the same thing.

Not sure what you mean alan. The htc desire at 3 years old is 'old' for a phone but meets the OP requirement.

The op was looking for a current or upcoming smartphone – I’d not class the Desire as either.

About the only option would be a Blackberry I think - all of them still seem to have the optical trackpads, even the touchscreen models.

That said, even the most recent touchscreen Blackberrys are over a year old now and with the impending launch of BB10, which seems to do away with the trackpads, it's subjective whether or not they would meet the OP's needs.

True, but it does have a good spec

BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 sound ideal for you, it's nice and fast and has a full keyboard including an optical trackpad. It does cost about £300 though.
