Good top 10, even if I don't personally agree with the placing of those in the top 10, personally Strawberry Fields Forever should be number 1.

The Kinks would have been my choice for top spot in that top ten, followed by the Beach Boys, the Stranglers and then Ultravox.
Can't stand Queen or "Fairytale Of New York". |

That's a pretty strong set of songs. Only disagreement for me would be James; would have preferred Squeeze or Pulp or Elvis Costello instead.
Good news for me is that Wonderwall could only limp in at 13, and that's far higher than it deserves to be, IMO. |

Looking at the top 10, I can understand why the public voted for Vienna as it was beaten by a novelty record ....The quandary is best number 2 song or most deserving number 1 ( ie. denied by a poorer song or for some other reason - time has become a huge iconic song). Vienna probably fits a deserved number beaten by a novelty act but not the best number 2 song ever.

That was the Radio 2 poll.Fair enough.
But what would the 'Nations favourite number two' be if Radio 1 listeners were polled ? "Sloppy dump after a curry & 5 pints" by 'My arse' !! |

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01p...mber-2s-top-40 It's a great list. Vienna deserved to be a no. 1 but I'm not sure it is the best no. 2? It has a great tune but the lyrics are not brilliant. When I was a kid I could never understand why Ride a White Swan only made no. 2? It was so quirky and original and T.Rex were brilliant. Of the more recent songs, Bittersweet Symphony such a masterwork, stalling at no. 2? |

I love synthpop and thought the New Romantics had a quirky charm but for some unfathomable reason I don't like Vienna and whenever I hear it I can't help but think of the cat out of Rising Damp.

I like Vienna and went to see Ultravox not long back on the Brilliant tour but I can understand some peoples dislike for the track. I think over the years if the words synth have been mentioned then Vienna is never too far behind with some sample or other blaring out whilst many other really good synth tracks hardly get a look in.

I too like "Ride A White Swan" and certainly prefer it to those tracks in top ten by the Pogues, James, Queen and Aha. I would also have liked to have seen two classic Elvis no. 2 singles from the fifties, "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Hound Dog" make this top ten, but that was always going to be a bit of a non-starter, as lovers of such vintage music are now, unfortunately, very much a minority amongst the Radio 2 listeners who voted in this poll, and even more so on this forum. |

In 1981, 'Vienna' was No.2 for 4 Weeks.
It was held at No.2 by 2 Singles. For its first Week, by John Lennon's 'Woman', & then for 3 Weeks by Joe Dolce's 'Shaddup You Face'. But, 'Vienna' was a bigger Hit than both of them. It hung around the Top 10 longer, & sold 735,000 copies. Enough to be the 5th Best Seller of 1981. The Joe Dolce Hit sold 720,000, & was 8th, & the John Lennon Hit sold 622,000, & was 16th. So, 'Vienna' was one of those No.2 Hits, that outsold most of the No.1 Hits, in the Year that it Charted. |
