Galaxy Ace - how to uninstall things / internal memory issue
BluesTrainRadio

My wife has a Galaxy Ace, she likes it overall and no real problems. I did see a comment about the lack of internal memory but as the SD memory is quite big, didn't see any issues.

However, she went to upgrade her Facebook app but was told she didn't have enough memory, even though the SD card is largely unused. It seems most apps go straight to the phone [ is there some way of directing them to the sim card? ]

There are several pre-installed apps that she doesn't use or need, eg: Auto Trader and Amazon, on the phone memory but I can't find any way of deleting them. I go to the correct screen for deleting, press on the required app but all buttons are then greyed out and you can't delete.

Are we doing something wrong or is this a major flaw with the phone? She uses FB regularly and it seems mad that we cannot install an update and she can't use it, when the SD card is mostly empty.

Any advice appreciated!

Tap the menu key, then settings, Applications, you should be able to see a tab called SD. Select that and then from the list of apps, put a tick in the box where you want it moved to the SD card. This should bring up a new screen with a box labelled, move to SD card.

Apologies if I have this wrong but its from memory, I only have a JB Galaxy Note as reference with me.

If the Facebook app is in-built then the updates will also go into device memory (at least that's how it works on my HTC). It's very frustrating as apps like Facebook, Google Maps etc get enormous update files and I often have to completely delete all the updates in order to download and install the new one (my phone also has minimal in-built memory a bit like the Ace). Newer phones don't seem to have this issue.

Dai: thanks for that, I will try it when I get home.

Grump: Thanks also...I was thinking that maybe I need to uninstall the FB app and add it again. Seems a bit silly though. What I am now worried about, is all the pre-installed apps that she doesn't need or use, I want them off the phone but there doesn't seem to be a way of doing it??

To remove stuff that's built into the ROM, you'd have to root the phone and install a custom ROM from sites like XDA Developers. If you're not that tech savvy though, it's not so simple, and if something goes wrong you could end up with a dead phone, so pursue that option at your own risk.

Ah...sounds a tad risky then! That just seems to be ridiculous though...they give you apps you probably wont need and then wont let you delete them in order to put things you will use on there!

Yes, it's very annoying. There are a handful of apps on mine I don't want, and I can't remove them to free up space. Just need to make sure I buy a phone with more on-board memory next time.

On my Galaxy Apollo I can simply go to Settings, Apps and on clicking each app I get options to clear data, uninstall and move to SD card.

I quite imagine its the same for the Ace which may well be the Apollo's successor.

Not for apps that are in the phone's ROM you can't. You can only do that with apps you've installed yourself.

Very true, but it is hoped that his girlfriend will be satisfied that the permanent apps will have plenty more room for updates if the downloaded ones are shifted to the SD card.

In the end, I uninstalled Facebook app and the Messenger app and re-installed FB only, I couldn't see any other way to sort it.

There is obviously a big flaw with the Ace sadly...I have the S2 and don't think I have had the same problem. Its a bit useless when you have a phone for two years and can't get rid of things you don't want!
