Hi folks,

Sorry if this was discussed but I've just noticed on Wikipedia that one of Corrie's original cast members, Daphne Oxenford, died on 21 December.

Obituary in the Times.

The voice that reminds me of my childhood. "Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin."

Very sad news, the last of the older generation of the original Corrie cast

Such sad news. There's only Doreen Keogh left who was an 'adult' in the first cast, the rest of the actors still alive were 'the teens' (even though they were all well into their 20s!)

Very sad - I was watching her in an old episode of 'To the Manor Born' on DVD yesterday, where she played the owner of the village shop.

Very sad - I remember LWM - late 50s for me - very well. I especially remember Daphne, and Dorothy Smith (who was in Emergency! Ward 10). It was preceded by The Shipping Forecast which fascinated me and I still listen to it to this day

I didn't know that you listen to the shipping forecast mrb ... but then, why would I?

It's my daily mainstay on an evening, always listen to the 00:48 broadcast.

I love 'Sailing By' too

I haven't seen many of Esther's episodes - she seemed like Emily before Emily - even though Emily was there

Me too, Twinkle. I can hear the music too.

Sad news. RIP. I'm glad that she had a long and varied career.

RIP Daphne. I remember her as the voice from my young childhood on 'Listen With Mother'

Bit disappointing the lack of people posting in the thread. Maybe it's mostly us 'oldies' that remember her from Listen With Mother? I didn't even know she was in Corrie, but she was a fine actress.

I actually think Doreen Keogh died. My friend in school's mother worked in Irish Tv, and he said she or his dad told him that she had died, after the Royle Family episode "Joe's Crackers" was shown 5 years ago, in which she isn't in. Her character Mary was off-screen killed off in the nest special.

Such happy memories of Daphne; Goodbye dear lady. In Coronation Street, I vaguely remember that she had a brother; I think his (real) name he was Dudley something; does anyone remember him?

Don't know what you've been looking at and who's Doreen?

Look at the post directly above Charky's. They are talking about Doreen Keogh being the only remaining adult cast member after Daphne Oxenford's death.

I'm from a generation who remembers him for 'Picture Box', rather than Corrie!

Esther's Hayes (Daphne Oxenford) brother Tom in Coronation Street was played by Dudley Foster in the early 1960's. Sadly, Dudley died in 1972 aged just 48.

Dudley Foster committed suicide by hanging himself in 1973. Tragic.
