For both. The annocement it was being updated was a contributing factor to the purchase. I didn't realise the wait would be as long.

I guess that's where we differ then. I wouldn't spend all that money for a promise from a company not even written into my contact.

Once you sign that contract they owe you nothing beyond it.

I think I'm a bit confused myself! I love fast innovation, but I'm surprised how many Android phones can't take more than one or two versions of the OS before they are dropped from future upgrades.

It'll be interesting to see what the shelf life of the Nexus 7 is.

That said, improvements in hardware technology over 1-2 years is still pretty vast, so I guess a matching shelf life is to be expected.

Why would you do that? You aim for one that's going to be futureproof for as long as possible

Upgrading a PC is like rooting your phone, which you can do on any android device. If thats what your after then this "promise" means bugger all anyway.

Apparently no one cares about the phone being future proof, and are more than happy carrying one which will become outdated and unsupported within a year. Judging by the many sentiments in this thread.

Personally if I buy a Nexus device id hope it would be supported/updated for a couple of years. Do I expect it to be updated forever ? No.

If all phones were supported 'forever' then the software would have to be very restricted to allow it to run on older handsets and would be less innovative and forward facing.

Manufacturers have to build something into their model to encourage people to upgrade to a new unit after a reasonable amount of time.

Dont forget that your phone doesnt suddenly become worse than it was when you bought it. You simply dont get further updates.....

If you dont buy a Nexus then you factor in likliehood of updates into your purchase decision.

At least my Gnex will get one last software update next year and have ALL the features of the new OS (obviously hardware dependent) ....... Just in time for me to buy next years Nexus when my tariff is done

which announcement was this exactly and when? I assume it was from Samsung saying what exactly as I am still unaware of any specific statement in relation to my phone from them so would be very interested what they have said several months back in relation to yours.

I'm waiting on the same update for the Galaxy S2. Was supposed to be before christmas but has slipped to this month....ish. (Timescales have only ever been rumoured rather than solidly announced AFAIK)

Having seen that 2.3->4.0 made very little difference after touchwiz was stuck over it, I don't find it a *huge* deal, but 4.0->4.1 is a bit step up and would be nice to have the goodies.

It was late September and was a list provided by Samsung. It was reported in detail at the time (as there were a number of phones) and discussed on this very forum.

I assume they were not talking about my phone specifically (as I hadn't bought it then).

Yes, that was the original article and you are correct that it does not give any timescales. It then comes down to what people consider reasonable as a timescale for update.

Jelly Bean was released in July, the Samsung update list in September and it is now January. I've been told it may appear this month, so I look forward to it.

So if they didn't say a time scale, how has a "promise" been broken by not delivering it yet?

My point is that is it poor service and does not reflect well on either google or samsung, whether they are directly responsible or not.

If it was a Nexus with an update coming directly from Google, I'd expect it pretty much straight away.

If it's a SIM free device from the manufacturer, maybe 1-2 months after the Google update.

If you've got a carrier branded ROM on a device that came on contract, then how long is a piece of string? Based on my experience of updates for Windows Mobile with T-Mobile, bloody months after it came out for SIM free phones! (up to 6 months later).

I should say that I don't feel the latter is reasonable, but it seems to be how long it takes because the carriers insist on endless tests to make sure the update doesn't break anything. Whilst I applaud their efforts to get things right, I'm sure they could have got it processed quicker than they did.

My phone still runs Gingerbread, but it is due to get a Jelly Bean update sometime this year. Is it true you lose a few apps when you update your Android OS?

So your claim that promising have been broken not exactly true then. given the range of android phones and where the ace sits in the pecking order don't think you have been waiting that long still no update to my note which I would expect before the ace.

Having trouble seeing exactly what your issue is here the s3 has not long finished its updates so not sure why you consider you should be on the same schedule as a flagship phone?

When any OS is updated, be it Android or iOS, some apps wont work till the developer updates them. The only app i used that broke with each update on both iOS and Android was Sky Go. Sky devs are absolutely pathetic and take an age to update it.

Agreed. I didn't realise the situation was so fluid. I can only assume that the likes of Samsung have a hugh number of builds for their phones. Must be a CM nightmare.

There are a huge number of additional features on these phones especially s3 and note for example that mean a port with just tw laid on top is not possible

I've never lost any apps upgrading. What can happen is that you won't be able to reinstall some apps from Google play if you uninstall them, until their developers are happy it works on the new os, but (sky aside) if you have it on your phone already it will continue to run.

No self respecting gadget freak wants to buy something that is future proof. It gives no justification to wife (or even self) for upgrading in the near future
