Cover songs which are as good as or surpass the original
I can't help it, i LOVE James Arthurs cover of Impossible, to me it's equally as good as Shontelle's original...a song i really love. To me they are two different songs, sang so differently and so soulfully.
Not many songs i can say i thought a cover was better than or at least equal to the original. What are yours?

The Power of Love by Gabrielle Aplin to me is better than the original version by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's 'All Along The Watchtower'.
Kirsty MacColl's version of Billy Bragg's 'A New England'. Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah' over Leonard Cohen's original. Soft Cell's cover of Gloria Jones' 'Tainted Love'. Flying Picket's version of Yazoo's 'Only You'. If anyone says 'Skinny Love' by Birdy, I might cry. |

I don't watch the Xfactor. I think James' version of the song is kind of embarrassing. I don't think much of his voice based on that song.

Johnny Cash - Hurt, Westlife's - Uptown Girl and Bowie and Jaggers - Dancing in the Street are ones that spring to mind!

I think Glee often out performs originals:
Rumour Has It/Someone Like You www.youtube.com/watch?v=naYCHVYLl3Y Oops I Did It Again www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVLwlFJad54 Teenage Dream www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr1p7BvCQ0U Unpretty/I Feel Pretty www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdqUJT-nPes But other than that: Cher Lloyd - Turn My Swag On (Keri Hilson/Soulja Boi cover) www.youtube.com/watch?v=JglWZ-wC3Vk Vince Kidd - Like A Virgin (Madonna Cover) www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFcOuFD0k5Y Marina & The Diamonds - Starstrukk (3OH!3 cover) www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQYo6rXVIGY |

I'm not sure about Glee although some of their covers are OK - I think that its just that kind of over processed sound I'm not too keen on although they're obviously reasonable singers.
Covers I like better than the original Careless Whisper by the Gossip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybZzx4xs4JU Teardrop by Elbow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5l9Q2m1P4Xo Tiga - Hot in Here (vocals by the singer in the Scissor Sisters) - slightly creepy video though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJKvxoqnyZw Satisfaction - PJ Harvey and Bjork.....this ones a bit marmitey but I really like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AX2bcWtg1Q |

Johnny Cash's "Hurt" was incredibly haunting and better than the original!
Leona Lewis' "Run" took that song to a whole new level. |

I would also say Gabrille Aplin has done a brilliant job with Power Of Love - I like her version way better. And also with Vince Kidd's like A Version - such a great version!
And also Westlife's Uptown Girl - they made it more modern and it is a very very popular version. I hear more their version on the radio than Joel's. However, I would like to add theirs Your Raise Me Up because even some non-Westlife fans praised their version. And I think theirs Total Eclipse Of The Heart is very good - I think they did song's justice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gvfxbo-kA9M I also think Buble's Cry Me A River is an amazing cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyIHQFfj7UI And I really like Dixie Chicks - Can't Hurry Love and I'm not even a fan of the group: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTHqYm4FZU4 |

Lady Marmalade - Christina Aguilera, P!nk, Mya & Lil' Kim
Their version is simply on another level to any other version of the song! The production, arrangements, video, even the mix of artists is just perfect! |
