Prompted by a thread in GD about buying VCR players, it was mentioned that there are apparently a lot of movies released originally on video that are still not yet available on dvd, blu ray or any other format.

But I have to be honest I really cannot think of any.

I am also talking worlwide here, not just UK. Many films are available on other regions if not here, and it's very easy to go multi region these days.

I just can't think of anything that I don't either already have or don't want or that is not due to be released.

Any ideas?

It's a shrinking list, for sure, most remaining unreleased are TV shows (Man from Atlantis, where are you?!) - but I can think of one straight away someone mentioned here recently, 'Static'

There is a difference between "remastered in HD" and "released on BluRay"!!!

A fair number of the movies shown in HD on Sky (and other movie services around the world) may NOT have a BluRay release.....either because of being too new a transfer (the older Bond films got their HD premieres on Sky for example but are now out on BluRay) or it not being a popular enough movie!

There are literally thousands of genre films (kung fu, westerns, historical adventures, thrillers, b-movies) that got a VHS release in their country of origin (and sometimes in England/USA) but which are now long forgotten. Most are likely no good, but think of all the gems awaiting rediscovery...

Then you need to give some actual examples, because every single film and tv series mentioned on here so far I have shown is actually available on DVD.

I fail to see how this has anything to do with this topic or what i posted.

Name a film that was out on VHS and isn't available on DVD and/or Blue Ray.....thats the subject.

Yeah, because they're all mainstream. Randomly, I picked South Korean horror films. No doubt a few of these will have found their way onto DVD but the majority haven't!

I can't believe people still say BLUE ray.

It's BLU!!!!!

And The Blob (1958) is out on Criterion Blu-ray in the US in March, and Twighlight Time plan to release the better than expected remake this year too.

Most of the titles people are quoting tend to be relatively obscure items, or little known movies.

But I remember going back say, 10 years or so, there used to be constant threads about why certain movies had not yet been released on DVD or blu ray, and often well known titles...but over the years it seems we now have pretty much all of the movies we want on the new formats.

So I was kind of thinking of known titles.

And I will give you two examples (sort of) are The Abyss and True Lies.

Both have been released on DVD, but bizzarely The Abyss is not anamorphic. True Lies is, but the UK dvd is heavily cut and the US version is not anamorphic. But neither of these are yet on blu ray.

However, word is blu ray releases are planned this year apparently.

The film site CHUD has a column called "Collecting VHS" which reviews films that have never had the dvd or blu treatment. Very funny and informative column imo.

I'm still waiting for a film from the 80's to come out on region 2, I don't think it ever will though.

"The Monster Squad"

Michael Mann's film The Keep is not on dvd in any region I believe, though it was shown on Film4 a few weeks ago.
