He won Jo Whileys "Live lounge championship" with this yesterday. I'm not a big fan or his, or the programs that 'found' him, but he does have an amazing voice, and his cover of this outcast tune is fantastic!!
I've really enjoyed listening to Jo Whiley this week - some of the covers this year in the live lounge have been great.
My favourite is 'How Come' by Embrace.
I think Will's version of Hey Ya is superb. I was at the New Theatre in Oxford when he sang it live on his theatre tour in May. His Mum and Dad were a couple of rows in front of me and he sang the line "Thank God for Mum and Dad" straight to them with a big grin. It was terrific.
It just goes to show that a cover can be as good as the original, if the singer changes the timing or tempo or mood of the song.
Both versions are memorable. Outkast's version was funny and Will's was sad and beautiful. Two completely different versions - both brilliant in their own way.
I downloaded the track off Itunes and even after loving Outkasts version found I was understanding the lyrics more in Will Youngs. A great version of a great song....

I've got this, but the version on the cd isn't the live lounge version which I prefer, I'll be buying the live lounge version album when it's released in the new year, there's some fantastic performances going to be on it.
