Animals of Farthing Wood

Anyone remember this childrens show from the early 90's? Massively popular with the kids at the time but would this show even get out of the blocks nowadays? Over the 3 series there was a total of 23 DEATHS!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_1Bu80v23E

Bearing in mind nowadays we cant even have adult quiz show shown without the Mail complaining, i wonder what there reaction to this would have been

I loved that show! And had the magazines to go with it, I think we still have them somewhere.

I think the top rated comment on that youtube vid "Thumbs up if you found this video by searching after reading about this nightmare cartoon on Cracked.com." tells you all you need to know about whether it'd still be commissioned today.

And looking at the cracked.com article I quote "It took the combined efforts of Britain and France to turn such a harmless-sounding concept into what's possibly the most depressing animated series ever made outside of Japan.".

I didn't find the cartoon depressing at all. I loved it when I was a nipper. The fact that they were constantly confronted with the real life and death situations of the animal world probably made the show more emotive and educationally beneficial to its viewers. I wouldn't be surprised if there are quite a few viewers who were prompted to grow up to be avid animal lovers by that cartoon.

I don't think it does anybody any good to shield children entirely from the reality of life and death.

I watched this, although I was a teenager, when they were shown, because I had read the books by Colin Dann.

I always came in from school to watch this. I Liked Kestrel. Was a little irritating though that they gave her a male kestrel body.

Me too! Where it showed you how to draw them. I had the pullout wood scene that you had to stick the plastic animals onto as well.

Decent kids tv. Alas there doesn't seem to be as much of that these days.

If you think the TV series had a lot of deaths you should try reading the books.

I used to watch it when I was little but it freaked me out. Not on the same scale as Watership Down though but it still scared me a bit.

I remember it, but I didn't watch the cartoon much. I used to read the stories in Toybox magazine (does anyone else remember reading that as a kid? It had loads of different characters in it).

I remember that, but I hated it when the animals died. So did my mum

I loved it, although I think I was a little on the young side for it (in terms of remembering it) - I loved Noah's Island though, which I believe was made by the same people.

I loved Noahs Island too, it was superb and it's a shame it's not as widely remembered as Animals of Farthing Wood is as it was just as good.

Never got into it as it wasn't my thing but I'm going to say the obvious and always misread the title as 'The Animals of Farting Wood'.

I remember this! It always seemed like a slightly less scary Watership Down. I absolutely loved Noah's Islands though. It didn't scare me like AoFW, but I remember it still being a bit of an emotional roller coaster for me because I love animals so much.

I think I still have the magazines too. I loved the show though it lost a lot of it's spark when the original characters died off; they had gone through everything which their offspring hadn't and I don't think the viewers had the same connection when they took centre stage though Bold's story was educational in some ways!

I loved it as a child, along with the books, I remember finding it really scary (I was probably about 4 or 5), and I loved all the animals in it. It was so much better than the kids shows they air nowadays, which basically patronize children. Kids can deal with a little death, darkness and cool wolves every now and then.
