Made at least 50 years ago, (may have been re-done I don't know)

Two guys talking about the death penalty (I think) one argues how easy it would be for an innocent man to be convicted of a capital crime, so he sets out to prove it, his safety net being that his friend knows the truth and will step in at the last minute to save him from execution.

Slight flaw in plan however, man is convicted and sentenced to die but his friend is killed and cannot come forward to save him.

That's the gist of it anyway.

Any ideas?

Sounds really familiar. Can't bring it to mind though.

Do you think it is a Hitchcock film perhaps ?

The Man Who Dared?

Edit:

Reporter George Macready has got a serious problem with people being convicted on circumstantial evidence, so much so that he frames himself for a murder to prove a point. He takes the precaution of providing Forrest Tucker (Larry) with the evidence that will save him once he has been proved guilty only Tucker is run over and put into a coma at the moment he is required to provide this evidence. It's up to Macready to sort things out by himself. First of all, he has to escape from custody.

Both sound like good films to watch.

OP it's probably one of those but another that you might like to view is
The Life of David Gale

I don't know the original but it the plot has been reused at least once in another film since then.

More annoying i can't name the remake

I have a feeling it may have been used in a tv episode or two as well, it's a familiar plot device.

I could see Dana Andrews behind bars in my mind, so I looked up his films on IMDB

That could also have been the one I remember zebedee, I can't be sure because it is the story I remember rather than who was in it
