Well here's one that does. For those that have any significant typing to do (such as emails or forum posting) then 4:3 is clearly better, except to those who are so illogically anti Apple that they refuse to see it.

Not noticeably so. In fact ironically the iPad mini keyboard in landscape mode is wider than the Nexus 7 one. However, if you are talking about portrait mode (since in your post you are inferring that users rarely want landscape mode), then the keyboard on the N7 is virtually unusable due to it being so narrow. I can type on my iPad mini virtually as fast as on a real keyboard, but nothing like that on an N7.
Im a IT business analyst so im used to gathering requirements meaning that I am aware that in these type of situations everyones requirements will differ

Any tablet is crap in that usage. If you touch type its impossible on a touch screen any way. At least android has swipe which is the only way to type fast on a touch screen.

I would love to see some statistics on the usage of tablets by Joe Public just to see how important or not the keyboard is. Personally, in my opinion,I think they are used a lot for social networking in which case keyboard use will figure highly.

Although I like swipe on Android I'm not convinced it's any faster than tapping. It's a very satisfying experience and for that reason I think it beguiles one into believing it's quicker. I will do some experiments when I have an idle moment or two.

4:3 is surely better for maps. And why I would not mind seeing the odd square phablet or even two.

Well stop posting your crap on here and you will be able to get a proper wide screen tablet

Its faster for me as a touchtyper because I never ever finger type. Swiping words it's so much faster.

Surely 16:9 isn't a great format for web browsing, and just gets worse as screens get smaller.
In landscape mode, the short height of the screen on a 16:9 tablet means you're having to scroll much more. A 4:3 tablet is probaly wide enough to display the whole width of the website well, and there's more vertical space to see more of the page. Someone mentioned that websites are designed for widescreen these days. Of course that's true, but surely that means even more problems when using a 16:9 tablet in portrait? Yes, you have more vertical space, but the width of the website is now crammed into a small space. If you watch a lot of video, 16:9 is obviously the better format. I'm not convinced it's better for browsing though. |

Swype & Slide-It were good but SwiftKey is excellent and you can type so fast with both thumbs. Also did Swype or Slide-It hold the world record for typing a little while back? |

I did my experiments today and came up with the following -
I decided to input by various means the first paragraph of a Bill Bryson book which started with this - "sometime after we moved into a former Church of England rectory in a village of tranquil anonymity in Norfolk, I had occasion to go up into the attic to look for the source of a slow but mysterious drip. As there are no stairs to the attic in our house, the process involved a tall stepladder and much unseemly wriggling through a ceiling hatch, which was why I had not been up there before (or have returned with any enthusiasm since)." My goal was 100% accuracy including punctuation and brackets. Any typos with voice or swipe were then corrected by keyboard. The results were (min:sec) - iPad mini voice recognition 2:18 iPad mini landscape KB 2:23 iPad mini portrait KB 2:25 Nexus 7 voice 4:01 Nexus 7 landscape KB 3:43 Nexus 7 portrait KB 3:26 Nexus 7 swipe 4:12 MacBook voice 1:04 MacBook keyboard 1:52 Some interesting results. Firstly, the iPad mini turned in much faster times. Secondly, the faster result for the N7 in portrait mode vs landscape mode. This was because in landscape mode on the stock keyboard the space bar is very thin and easy to miss. There is no worse typo than missing a space as the autocorrect then doesn't work. Thirdly, the difference between the voice recognition times. This is purely due to the fact that typos are then corrected with the keyboard. It is much easier to correct with a real keyboard, but I also found the iPad keyboard very much easier to make corrections with than the N7 one. The problem with the N7 is that quite often you tap a word and nothing happens. The iPad is much more consistent. Fourthly, the swipe time - this was the slowest of the lot. Now I know I am not particularly proficient at swiping but I really don't think I could improve my skill to double the speed. As I suspected, the swipe technique feels smooth and flowing but in practice is no quicker than typing. |

Voice recognition took 1 min 49 seconds allowing for corrections. The voice software is the same on the N4. Took 2 attempts though. First one was thwarted from the cat deciding to pounce on me and meow in my face which confused the Nexus 4 lol ![]() Samsung laptop about 40 seconds! But then i am damn fast at typing! Shall try my dads ipad mini when i see him next if he will let me of course

Using an iPad 3, I managed it in 1:35 using the landscape keyboard, and 1:14 (including all corrections) using voice recognition. Even though I generally hate voice input, I have to admit hat it was a lot faster than I expected!

It would appear that some people in this forum are supermen when it comes to typing. I have been a 'hunt and peck' typist for going on 50 years and am a darn sight faster than most of my friends and acquaintances. I think my capability is closer to the average man in the street than some here. You've only got to put the two keyboards side by side to realise that you are bound to miss keys moire often on the N7 than on the iPad, they;re just plain smaller - putting aside the fact that the N7 sometimes just doesn't respond or is sluggish.
Incidentally, Stiggles, it's not quite a fair comparison having your missus dictate - it's the act of looking away to the book and back to the keyboard that induces some of the errors. I could improve my times considerably that way. BTW, I did the iPad times first, which should have given the N7 a bit of an advantage as I was starting to learn it by then. |
