It's basically the same column every week, with the words just jumbled up, like a bloody record stuck in a groove.

Why is everyone so bitchy about poor Liz? I have been waiting (with bated breath and rolly eyed smilie) for her to dump the dead beat boyfriend, and I hope she can now get on with her life.
Her column is the first thing I read in You magazine, possibly because she is like me but so much worse... I do hope she hasn't been fired from the MoS. I am a little younger than Liz and I have managed to learn that if a relationship is not making me happy, it's not worth trying to force it. You can't drag up an old hippy and turn him into a gold Dunhill lighter-flicking Cartier ring-bearing mannequin. Frankly even if you could, there would be something wrong with it in Liz's eyes. The woman thrives on complaining. I worked with someone very similar - revels in others' misfortune, always finds fault with anything that comes her way. As a colleague said at the time, you could give her a million bucks and she'd whine about having to pay tax on it. |

Totally agree. What's more, she's always acted as if he owes her something because he didn't fancy her in the first place! I also think she spent money to try and attract him more with her lifestyle, but he never seemed the sort of bloke who would want that lifestyle. I wonder if she was getting desperate after the Rock Star, the married man in South America and the married vet in Devon didn't take the bait?
I do feel a bit sorry for her because she seems incapable of seeing what is wrong, ie blaming everyone else for her bankruptcy, and, until she does, she will never sort herself out and simply continue getting on people's nerves. She lost half her salary when the Mail fired her for going on "Big Brother" against their express wishes, as if she thought she was untouchable. I think, like others, that someone like Paul Dacre (Editor in Chief of the Group) should take action to get her professional help to sort herself out, not keep paying her for bad articles. He's a dreadful advert for a manager, isn't he? |

I guess it's a matter of perspective. Me, I see a woman who pursued a guy she'd had a crush on for 30 years, then complained for what, three or four years because he didn't actually measure up to the fantasy, while unrelatedly bankrupting herself and blaming everyone else on the planet for it.
As a colleague said at the time, you could give her a million bucks and she'd whine about having to pay tax on it. I guess a lot of us posting here have been at one time or another in a relationship that didn't work - or turned out completely toxic. But how many of us would go so public about it, even if we had the chance? OK, we'd moan about it to family and friends, but plaster it all over the media? Ironic, as Suzy_Cat points out, she apparently yearned for him for 30 years, droned on in her books, 'Diaries' etc. about how he never returned her tennis bat or whatever it was, then FINALLY 'gets' him. Well, the 'honeymoon' didn't last long. And now, she is just being so bloody vindictive and spiteful about the guy. He never goes to 'the ballet, opera, Old Bond Street...' Perhaps the poor bloke can't afford to? (Incidentally, when did Jones ever write about attending the ballet or opera herself? Her idea of 'high culture' seems to be the box set of 'Sex and the City') And we all know why she'd like him to have visited Old Bond Street .... that damn 'insult' ring - yup, she's still on about it. Nastiest of all, her crack about men who live 'the life of Riley' in assisted housing garden flats, paying a pittance in rent and who take drugs and don't even have to buy a light bulb. Ah yes, that pesky bathroom light bulb again. THIS, about the man she went on and on and on about being the Great Love of her life. She should be thoroughly ashamed of herself. But of course she won't be - she'll just continue trashing reputations, upsetting her poor family, blaming HMRC and everyone else for her financial woes. I bet The Baker bitterly rues the day he re-established contact with her. |

I've given up reading her columns and this thread is too long to trawl through - has she chucked David Scrace?

In her diary on Nov 24th she quotes him as saying 'That's why I left you' so I think the honours for seeing sense go to David. But in a week or so she'll be claiming she ended it. Or it's back on. Or it was never off. Or any nonsense she thinks she can get away with. (I think it will depend on the Prosecco to blood ratio at the time of writing.)

Oh my goodness, it just gets nastier and nastier. Agree wholeheartedly with the above posts. We all know Liz likes to get her revenge in print, and for many years she's taken veiled (not well-veiled enough) potshots at anyone who she believes has done her wrong. But I think she upped the ante horribly by identifying D so precisely, not only using his full name, but even at one stage giving the address of the house he used to live in. So this isn't some faceless anonymous "character"; it takes the current sniping to a whole new level....far more damaging and hurtful than some random ranting about a Rock Star most people didn't believe existed anyway. In the case of D, every word she writes, every relative or ex she carps about, means real, identifiable people are being dragged through the mess.
It's hard to pick a "nastiest moment" in this weeks crueltyfest. But I think the award has to go to the deliberately dismissive comments in the post office about the items she was returning to D, including a necklace that has sentimental value to his mother. Just imagine how that poor lady would feel if she reads that. Liz clearly wanted to get across the point that she begrudged paying the £12.99 postage to return these items that had significant meaning for D and/or his family. It really does take the whole thing into new and uncharted areas of absolute spite. Bearing in mind the way she's endlessly rehashed past slights, (Millennium Eve, sister/cottagegate, Dunhill lighter, the £21.99 ring,) can you imagine how many years she might continue to punish D in print for what she sees as his fault? If the Mail continue to let her rant and repeat herself in print, who knows how long this could go on? Why oh why are the Mail editors continuing to publish this stuff? |

The thing about the Disliked Ring, as well as being a rip from SATC (Aiden picked a ring that Carrie found hideous), is that it just breaks my heart to think that you'd get so petty about a gift from someone you profess to love. He even SAID at the time that it was more a token and that he'd understood that she wanted to wear her mother's ring.
The cost of a present means nothing. The nicest floral tribute I ever got was a sprig of jasmine my ex spontaneously cut from a bush while we were having breakfast. Sure I've had some bouquets, lovely ones. But that was the nicest because it was a love gift. I could slap Liz for her attitude to DScrace sometimes. And sure, he may well not be Love's Elderly Dream and there may be many things wrong with him, but as an independent woman Liz has had NO reason to stay with him so long if that were the case. She has complained about him the whole time, they don't live together, they barely seem to actually speak. So it's not like she was in some kind of abusive set up where she felt she couldn't quit. |

She very evidently has a low emotional age compared to her actual age.
I'm still not totally sure D Scrace isn't a willing (and paid) partner in these columns as I cannot see that any man would tolerate her lack of manners and abusive behaviour to him, waiters, shop staff etc. It just makes no sense - unless he is emotionally illiterate too? I'm not sure why I still read most of her columns but it's not for enjoyment. Some of the actual interviews are good but most of the fashion and beauty stuff is off track or outdated and the Diary is the modern day equivalent of going round Bedlam on a Sunday, to laugh at the inmates. That's what is sad - that the MOS is not protecting her from herself. |

Dont think Baker Boy is innocent in all this, he knew what he was getting into when he contacted her 3 years ago.
The two of them are probably sitting, quaffing champagne, smoking the "rollies" her word not mine, as we read and comment on them. |

I'm sure that Liz didn't wear the £22 ring anyway. I feel sure she wore her mothers ring which was diamond ? Why replace a ring she is happy to wear ? Personally I would much rather wear my late mothers engagement ring than a new one from H.Samuels.

Poor Liz seems to have a mindset that equates showing love and affection with spending a lot of money on someone. If you haven't got any money, then you should willingly go into debt in order to show that love. Sad, if true, and the Liz of the Diary is not just a media invention. |

That's the really sad thing, it is all about money. She equates it with love.

It's 6:30 am on Sunday and sure enough, the Dreary today is the same as last week's. But why oh why don't we get a Christmas dose of Liz's Dreary Christmas?
And IS it true that she won't be back in the new year? |

Christmas Day is usually a non-publication day, but the internet cares not for these niceties. Online news service is the same as ever (and there are ALWAYS staff working on metro dailies on Christmas Day anyway, even if it's only a skeleton crew).
In theory Liz could have filed the column ages ago and all the web editor has to do is set it up to publish at midnight Christmas Eve. It's not like she's sitting in a garret tapping out her column by the light of a single Dyptique stub every Saturday night. |

Because I think Christmas Day is the one day of the year that newspapers aren't printed. Correct me if I'm wrong and this has changed since I left the UK.
That said, I hope all have had a happy Christmas and will have a happy Boxing Day as well. Someone in my life splashed out and bought me a pair of Hunter wellies so that I can muck around in the garden and at the Yuba River. They aren't dirty yet and I love them; I can even get my fat calves into them. So I'm lying in bed with them on. Whoopee! |

M;y point was that the dreary is written for publication in You magazine, therefore it would not be published online if it is not in the printed edition. The website supposedly keeps up with news (although in the DM's case their definition of "news" is dubious), but I presume does not publish those columns and articles that are specific to the print edition. Just be thankful we are spared her whinings on Christmas Day.

Ah, that makes sense. So there won't be one this week at all for that reason. How can I live without knowing what happened several weeks ago in the Baker-Liz love drama? I guess I will just have to drown my sorrows in cheap Prosecco.
