MacDonald indicated that it was a major cock up that Savile slipped through the net and didn't face prosecution......he reckoned he would have been convicted and received a lengthy prison sentence.

I work as a nurse in Scotland and have to undergo a full disclosure/criminal records xheck on employment. Haven't had to fill one in since 2005 though, however if convicted of anything since I eould be suspended and ultimately fired.

The revelation that Savile abused pupils at regular schools (and quite a few different ones) is a new one alright.....apparently he used Jim'll Fix It as a vehicle for this.

Slightly O/T but my local vicar used to pop in to see my husband at our home when my husband was terminally ill. They talked almost exclusively about rugby for hours. She knew we were not particularly religious and respected that - no mention was made of religion. The vicar felt that as my husband lived in her parish, then he was one of her flock ( so to speak) and was basically there for him regardless.

edit...........when I was in hospital many years ago, the hospital chaplain used to visit me each evening to help with my A level revision! That was the way he could best help me!

Sorry, just catching up with posts. Thats really nice whatever helps! I bet some kids would be seriously disappointed if they were given homework in hospital - like there's no escape from homework lol. I imagine it would be quite comforting if you were otherwise on your own, to have someone to talk to like that...I 'only' have my parents to talk to most of the time, or friends on twitter. I know my mum was getting a bit fed up in the ward she was on over Christmas because other patients had loud relatives who would visit when she wanted to get rest...

I work in a college with 16-18 year old students (and older, obviously) - I had to complete a compulsory half days child protection training in 2005 and we had a computer program thing that talked about some relevant laws and what to do if we see anyone being bullied or if someone confides things to us, just a quick refresher 'course' if you can call it that but I think alot of people don't bother completing it as they keep mentioning at staff meetings that everyones supposed to do it but records show very few have completed it.

I don't remember having to complete any forms for criminal record checks or anything - I was offered the job the day after the interview and started work a few days later (in 2002). There are young students that live on campus but I guess they don't think its high priority to insist on such things?. If I see bullying when im working on my own, I'm not the best to deal with such things and warn people off, I'd probably be nervous of getting shouted at myself lol im really not the best at dealing with disruptive students, even though I'm at least a decade older than most of them - I really need to get more confidence for that sort of thing... I can't imagine a student deciding to confide in me either, I think I tend to look quite stressed so they gravitate more towards the others (who are too quick to point out my shortcomings to the students sometimes - ugh ). I'd like to seem/be more approachable but oh well...anyway sorry, prattling on again(!)

Good read indeed. I agree 100%. Very disappointed with this report which reported only statistics and gave no evidence whatsoever. I fully believe Savile was a sexual predator, but this hardly introduced anything new and didn't "give the victims a voice". I didn't listen any of them in it.

What an awkward memory to have...I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with any male gynecologist, let alone him lol I try to only see female GPs but then most of my issues are female issues I suppose

I didn't want to call in to work sick today though ive been off colour because I know I'd have to have a return to work interview with my male boss and I don't want to explain what the issue was (even though he's quite nice generally) - happy days(!). I don't think it is that simple. My mum worked as night superintendant in Scarboro hospital, she was told JS had taken children out for a runin his car at the weekends.
No one suspected anything, the concensus from day shift was "imagine someone that famous giving up their time". Mum always.worried about what would have happened if the kids became ill while out with him. She never met him as this was generaly a Sunday afternoon thing.

Yes. That was my guess. I only wished they made it clear there were evidences in some of those reports, no need to give details. The report is very short and weak and only fueled the some misogynistic people out there. I suspect that if the majority of Savile's victims were male they would be way more believed.

It seems extraordinary in hindsight, even without the sexual abuse element. A member of the public being allowed drive sick children off the premises, when they were supposed to be in the care of the hospital at all times and under constant medical supervision.

The Mail paper version has the Daily Mail Lottery taking the top half of the front page with Saville taking most of the rest and a bit with the Duchess of York in the bottom right corner.

Has an interview with a male victim, Kevin Cook, who says he only came forward when he discovered there was another male victim.
Ex-DPP says 3 of the 4 cases could have been prosecuted, the 3 corroborating each other, but the police didn't tell the complainants that there were other complainants; that corroboration hasn't been a legal requirement for years, and victims were not told that they could have anonymity if they went to court.

Says witnesses should have the option of giving evidence via video link instead of just behind a screen; thinks this is the sort of thing Keir Starmer has in mind.
