Yep. And to all those who say 'it was a different time', even then pretty much everyone thought it was disgusting and wrong.
He appears to have had parental permission. So that's all right then.

So her mother basically pimped her underage daughter out, then. Why hasn't she been arrested too?

Didn't she (Mandy's mum) then go out with his son or something? It was a very odd set-up.

Perhaps Mandy hasn't complained of abuse 40 years later.

This 2010 Daily Mail article suggests she's not too comfortable with that part of her life, actually.

'I don't think most 16-year-olds are ready. I think the age of consent should be raised to 18 at a minimum, and some girls aren't even ready then.'

I agree. I remember thinking at the time who needs a mother like that? But i also assumed it was who he was and she wouldn't have pimped her out to just any old bloke

TV weatherman Fred Talbot has been released on police bail after arrest following allegations of historic sexual abuse.

Shouldn't that be historical?

The Sun didn't. I remember their headlines around that time.

The tabloids referred to Mandy as a "wild child" - one of several at the time who frequented night clubs and got up to shenanigans with much older men. It struck me at the time as odd that children with such high profiles could get into night clubs at all and why the police never raided them.

Jimmy Saville giving Thatcher a cheque, in 1980

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...e-blunder.html

wait for it

the cheque is for:
National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children

That is sickening irony... with the iron lady
Now, looking back with hindsight

I did. Am a similar age to Mandy and remember being disgusted by the 'wild child' era and the way that the press, espcially the NOTW, exploited it. The names of Mandy Smith, Amanda de Cadanet and Emma Ridley (plus a few others) were flouted on a weekly basis while they were still underage. I remember thinking it weird that nobody seemed to do anything about it- lest of all their parents. I also remember Mandy's marriage to Bill Wyman and how ill she became.

Too much, too young and some of those dirty old rockers should have known better 'even back in those days'.

I've no idea. Maybe he jumps every time his doorbell rings?

I'm around the same age, too. I remember being horrified and realising, even then, that those poor young women were being used. I fancied popstars as much as anyone, but... eww.

My parents would not have been so accepting, and they were pretty liberal-minded.

Interesting in the light of her friendship with Savile.

So much for Victorian 'values'.

Mum nearly married him, iirc. It was sickening. Mandy was basically given up to him by her mother at 13.
