Apple ipad mini/ipad2
Phil F.
10-01-2013
Hi,
Thinking of getting my first tablet and I do fancy the ipad although I have read a lot here about how good the Nexus is!
I know a couple of guys at work who use the nexus but who have access to ipad mini's also and they say they would buy the ipad if they were paying for it themselves.
I would mainly use it for browsing,Sky Go,e-reading(Kindle account),the odd email.
However..Ipad mini £269...Ipad2...£329?
Which way to go?...

Go and try them. I never looked at the larger iPad (my wife has one), but I spent a while looking at the merits of the iPad mini and nexus 7 (I have an android phone). Try to get to look at them side by side so you can compare screen, speed, usability, etc.

I have an iPad and a Playbook. The iPad is bulkier to carry around, if I'm going out somewhere but don't want to carry a bag around the Playbook will slip into a jacket pocket.

So that's a big plus for the Nexus as well is the portability. However, I do find that if I'm doing a lot of surfing say at home on the sofa or on a long train journey, I prefer to use my iPad, as the bigger screen is just more enjoyable.

It's partly why I bought the Playbook, as an alternative to something much bigger.

One of the things you should consider is where am I going to use it most and for what? That's when the size issue in particular is relevant. The Nexus has it on portability, but if you want to do a lot of web browsing etc I think the larger screen is better.

I assume you mean nexus or ipad mini?

I agree though, where you are going to use it is an important part of it.

Yes a 7" tablet is great for portability but a larger tablet for prolonged use (in my view).

So a lot depends on where it's going to mostly be used, I'm not sure the iPad mini will fit in a jacket pocket though I haven't seen one in the flesh so to speak yet but a 7" tablet does quite easily.

I have both (first gen iPad so it's a bit bulkier than the later ones and apps are beginning not to function as well) and use the iPad at home for work and the mini for when I'm away from home. It's really light and tucks into the pocket of my bag quite easily. The screen is big enough for all casual uses (although I never use it to watch a film or anything like that).

Personally I'd opt for the Mini. Far easier to carry around. The 7.9" screen seems plenty big enough for casual use.

I have had a archos tablet, playbook, nexus 7 and now the Ipad mini.

as you can see I have gone through a few tablets.

Ipad mini is the keeper for me, basically due its the 4:3 screen its a far better surfing experiance in my opinion.

Nexus 7 would be my next choice just because of the apps and jelly bean software.

Playbook is also worth a look at as well, its a great little machine and great at browsing, Almost bought it again recently as its a great price for kids, better than some of these cheap android ones knocking about.

Wife has an ipad 2 basically same spec as the ipad mini, if you want a bigger screen.

Obviously a 10" is even better as is for many, one that can also run Flash.

I think the screen size goes back to the original comments about what the tablet is going to be used for and where.

To be honest, I'm not sure flash is relevant anymore.

I feel like the Mini is just too overpriced for what it is. A 32GB Nexus 7 is much better if you're going for a 7" tablet. 10" is a different story, it's all down to personal preference really, but then if you are considering an iPad 2 it's also worth looking at the Nexus 10 which has a far far superior screen. It just depends on what you are comfortable with though.

IMHO flash is still relevant but the previous post was suggesting that flash is available on a iOS browser so it wasnt a dig .....

I wasn't trying to be funny, it is just that so many websites have moved away from flash that I don't think it can really be part of the decision anymore. Of course, if as a user there are flash based sites you use regularly then it will be important.

Thanks everybody for your replies.....Still thinking about it but have decided on the 7ins tablet for portability and continue using my laptop at home.
Not convinced about the ipad now, having seen all the good reports here about the much cheaper Nexus 7...

Cheers...Phil

If it was going to be ipad I'd go for the mini for portability. I'd like an 8" tablet and at 7.9" the mini would be ideal - but too expensive IMO. Also I'm not an apple fan.

Also bear in mind that a more competitively specced ipad mini 2 has been rumoured pretty much as soon as the ipad mini 1 launched, with the latest rumours putting it only a couple of months away...
