Galaxy Note 1 and 'black clipping' issue...
ASIFZED
12-01-2013
Hi.

Do any Galaxy Note 1 owners suffer from the supposedly notorious black clipping issue, which impedes darker scenes during video playback? I currently do and, there has been Internet chatter on this for some months. Samsung were made aware of this problem some months ago and said they were looking into it... but then the Note 2 gets released and is, by all accounts, free of the defect.

What with the forthcoming JB update, the Note 1 still has a few more years use out of it and I actually prefer the viewing ratio / handling to that of the Note 2. But the black clipping issue does grate occasionally and is the only imperfect feature on an otherwise still great phone.

Has anyone got any update on this / similarly affected and their views as to what Samsung may do about this?

There's loans on the Web about it and it supposedly plagues nearly every handset. I'm on my second Note, which still had the issue. Although Samsung acknowledged the problem back in October 2012, it's gone all quiet since then.

I haven't watched a video on my note for a while. Just watching one now with black backgrounds. It seems to be OK.

No don't get that and i watch a lot of stuff on mine .... but does look a bit poor.

Usually a sign of overly compressed video but if it happens a lot as you say no idea sorry.

Wonder if it was fixed in later releases.

I got mine in mine in may so would have been a later one maybe.

I used to watch a lot of videos on there until I got my tablets. Didn't notice anything then either.

Hmmm. Got mine in March 12, so perhaps later models weren't affected. But definitely an issue for loads of Note owners in numerous countries, as you can see from internet forums.

Thanks for the feedback though. Don't tend to watch a lot of movies, just youtube stuff where it's sometimes noticeable. Just wish Samsung would pull their fingers out and sort it. Not end of the world I guess.

...one last thing. I'm hoping that the Jb upgrade may fix the issue, so...have any Note 1 SIM free handset owners had an update yet? Either OTA or via Kies desktop? Still some confusion over Jb update being released in Jan, or in Q2.

I've been checking daily via the handset, but nowt so far.

No mine is unlocked and I've not had anything. I think it could be a while yet.
