I gave up using them on my Moto Defy which has Gorilla glass and sure enough within a few weeks of careful use I could see little marks on the screen where it had probably rubbed agains a key in a poket. I was always very careful but clearly Gorilla glass scratches quite easily under the right (or wrong?) conditions.

I then used a flip case and that means no screen protector required and just the slight annoyance of the flip case when answering or using the phone.

Why would anyone put a phone in the same pocket as their keys?

Why not?

I bought a phone to make/take calls and be used, not to be kept in as-new condition forever. It isn't a work of art, it is a tool for doing a job.

I'd rather look after my phone and keep it in the best condition possible. My Nexus 4 is a work of art and I love it!

"hardly" isn't good enough for me. I ended up taking mine off my iPhone4 but my wife kept hers on. I could always tell the difference when i picked her phone up.

Really? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ....

But unless you're putting it in a transparent case, you won't be able to that work of art (honestly, I can't believe that anyone would think that of any regular production phone!!!)

What the hell is a non regular production phone then? Most modern phones look nice tbh. Would you say they all look ugly?

Non-regular production would be models like the B&O Serene, that whacky spinning Moto thing from a couple of years back, the Mobiado designs from a few years back and anything from Vertu ie. typically devices with much higher quality components - especially the Vertu, which despite being standard Nokia firmware and overall design, are built more like a higher end watch.

I'm not saying that modern phones are ugly at all, I just don't think they justify anything like the attention that some people pay them.

If the screen is of sufficiently low quality that it can't cope with a set of keys in the pocket, then its not been designed for typical usage.

I read that the oil resistant coating on phones and Ipads eventually wears away , for that reason alone surely a screen protector would be worthwhile

If the oil runs out, then surely its not fit for purpose?

reminds me of a lad at work , he bought an iphone 5 on launch day , the same day he had it in his pocket with a bunch of keys , and the same day he hit his leg against a door with the keys between the door and the screen , go on , guess the outcome ...............

I don't like the matte screen protectors but I've never had a problem with normal clear screen protectors. At first they do tend to not feel as good as glass but after a couple of days use the top layer wears away abit so they then feel fine. I've got protectors on both sides of my iPhone and you can barely tell. No air bubbles at all.

Hehe, well he would have bought what turned out to be a legendarily fragile product ...

But then unless you've got a truly strong (ie. bullet proof) case for your phone, a typical screen protector won't do much if you catch it between a set of keys and something else - depending on how hard it gets smacked.

Yes maybe, but if you are the type of person to use a screen protector then it's likely that you will be extra cautious and probably wouldn't put the phone in your pocket with items that could potentially damage the phone/screen.

I've got one on my galaxy note, I've had it on there from day one. I've also got one on my tablets. I'm debating wether or not to put one on my iPod touch. I used the iPhone 4 and 3G without a screen protector and they never got scratched.

I don't use them and have never had a scratch on my phones going back to the original iPhone up to my S2 and all inbetween.
I don't personally care whether someone wastes their money on one, or not. I don't find them necessary and I would never use the pocket i have my keys and change in as a phone pocket.

I use my phone out and about for work and often have loads of tools, second work phone, keys, memory sticks, security passes and lord knows what else and so sometimes a pocket can't be used soley for the carrying of a phone.

I'm not trimming my finger nails for my phone. My phone has to fit in with me.

Finger nails are nowhere near hard enough to scratch gorilla glass.
