After watching 'Rain Man' last night on ITV3, I started thinking about the best performance I've seen from an actor playing a disabled character. By that, I mean mental disabilities as well as physical ones.

Obviously, Dustin Hoffman was brilliant as Raymond Babitt, but I couldn't decide if it was better than Al Pacino in 'Scent of a Woman', or Leonardo DiCaprio in 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape?' I thought all three were outstanding.

What's the best you've seen?

Have to agree with Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis. Both excellent performances.

John Hurt in The Elephant Man. Hard to imagine a more physically demanding performance.

Clare Danes in Temple Grandin. It was a television film, not a cinema film though. She won loads of awards for it as well. Fantastic performance. If it had been a cinema film, i think she would of won an Oscar.

Toby Kebbell in Dead Man's Shoes. I spent the majority of my first viewing worrying about the ethics of using a mentally disabled actor in such harrowing scenes. I was a bit relieved when I went online afterwards...

Yeah, I remember seeing that and totally believed his portrayal and thinking it must've been tough to play some of the scenes.

Just reminds me of Robert Downey Jr saying in the fab 'Tropic Thunder', to a Ben Stiller bemused as to why he didn't win the Oscar for his portrayal of a mentally challenged person, never go 'full retard...'

Another one to see is Charly http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062794/ Cliff Robertson won an Oscar for his performance as a man with severe learning difficulties who is given a revolutionary medical treatment to improve his intelligence.
