Moving to EE4G
SkyPlatinum
13-01-2013
Just taken out a contract with EE T mobile Full monty @ £36 per month. I am contemplating moving to EE4G. Am I right in thinking that if I transferred to EE on the £46 per month tariff there is nothing extra to pay? Has anybody experienced the LTE speeds is it worth the extra money. Also it says a free film per week is this stopping in feb ?

To me it's worth the extra money. For me it's worth it just for the upload speed.

Well worth it, initially started with 20/30 Mbps, now on average getting closer to 35mbps

And occasionally I achieve these speeds

Yes, the free film a week ends next month.

Wow that's some speed. My only concern is going from unlimited data to 3GB. So as long as I upgrade my plan, there is no extra to pay then? Presuming they just send the new sim in the post??

I went from Orange Sim Only to EE so not sure what the costs are to transfer.

I get an 8 Gig allowance, and use around 5 gig of that.

The only time I came close to using the following 8 gig was in the first month, when I kept on doing speed tests every 5 mins in various locations.

Which phone have you got from T-Mobile?

No, nothing extra to pay and moving from T-Mobile is technically easier for EE internally than moving from Orange since EE4G uses the T-Mobile platform. You will also of course get the better Orange voicemail and EE Wednesdays.
Yes, you get a new LTE Sim.

DevonBloke maybe you can help me. I work in London which is obviously covered by LTE and I live in Colchester Essex, Chelmsford has just been covered which is about 20 miles away, will they be spreading out from there and covering Colchester next ?

No one really knows I'm afraid. I could try to find out for you.
They will obviously be rolling out to other cities and towns but what order is anybody's guess. They do seem to be activating a few high masts in each town and then filling in the smaller ones later. I would imaging that that the pattern would be a general spreading out from these towns since this would make it easier to adjust power levels and coverage as they go.
I will do some enquiring.

Those downloads look very good but explain to a thicko please:-

I would get those speeds and a 3 gig allowance a month - what am I gaining? My Facebook app loads quicker? The BBC webpage opens faster?

What will I be downloading on a phone to need those speeds? And even if I was watching streaming video for example, how quickly am I going to burn through my 3 gig allowance? (By quickly, I dont mean 4G speeds, I mean using up the data allowance)

Please tell me what I am getting with 4G other than a webpage opening faster or Google maps updating a bit quicker?

The ping will be massively lower for 1 thing, mine is usually around the 60's which is half that I can get at best on 3G. Web pages loads faster, as does anything that uses Internet.

You mention streaming, it is priceless for this. Videos don't buffer and run smooth and there is never any issues when watching SkyGo or the like.

You won't use any extra data if you are doing exactly the same as you are now, it will just all happen quicker.

I have had issues with speeds and never get as fast as some of the guys in mainland, but on the whole it's good and very fast and I wouldn't change back

I have noticed LTE in Chelmsford too, I live in Braintree so shouldn't be too far behind Colchester in getting LTE

davybhoy - thanks for that.

in Areas with 4G there is Better in-building coverage... where you currently get 2G only in some buildings.. you should get 4G.

Some video apps not only start quicker but stream at a better quality. As phones become faster and webpages, apps etc become more intensive/larger 3g will just not be fast enough.

My main like with LTE is upload speed as i upload alot of data and the lower ping (latency) just makes everything seem snappier basically like your on wifi at home!!
