Lossless to Lossy question
Kargo

Hey guys,

I have a quick question. A few years ago I ripped my CD collection to Apple Lossless format. I want to now add those albums to my iPod and as Lossless files are pretty big file sizes, I want to create 256kbps AAC (iTunes+) versions instead.

I understand that if I was to convert an MP3 file to AAC, this would lead to quality loss. Does the same apply if I was to convert the Apple Lossless files to 256kbps AAC or would this offer exactly the same result as ripping the CDs again directly to AAC?

Hope that makes sense

Thanks

It should be the same as ripping from a CD as the encoder will have the same information to work with.

you don't need to convert them
itunes has an option if you tick it, it will auto convert on the fly when syncing to your ipod.

connect your ipod and you'll see the setting.

There is no loss of quality. You can switch between lossless formats all the live long day.

MP3 is a lossy Codec any lossy to lossy conversion should be avoided as this losses info. Lossless to lossy is like the original ripping of a CD. As a rule use Lossless for archiving, lossy for protable devices
