I'm enjoying this series so much I've spent most of the day catching up I watched the first five episodes back to back

I like Mark Williams in it.

I've only recently discovered these books and love them! I haven't seen any of the programmes though. Do you know what channel they were on and when?
I wasn't convinced by Mark WIlliams to start with but he has really grown on me in the role. I do prefer Kenneth More in the seventies series but this series is really rather splendid.

I will miss it and I look forward to the next run.

I recorded these and have been watching them this week and last week - they are brilliant. Really enjoyed them.

I wonder when the next run is?

I loved the Kenneth More version, but will have to catch up with this new one, as forgot to put this on record...

Father Brown IMDB page
First I heard of the character was when it was on ITV in 1974 but didn't make time to watch it then. I've been trying to remember who played him in that series and can't believe they could have afforded Kenneth More for TV.

He had been in the 26 episode Forsyth Saga in 1967 and by 1974 Kenneth More was very glad to star in a TV series. And pretty lucky too, because he was IMHO too "light" an actor for the role of Father Brown. Of course compared to Mark Williams...

That's too early for me, as we only had tv in our house from late '67, and as for KM being too light, wasn't he the star of the Titanic film, released in the year of my birth, [A Night to Remember]? I saw him in the 70s [twenty years after it was made] with John Gregson in 'Genevieve'.

Just continuing to watch these at my own pace. Enjoying them. I really think this show is so much better than the old series. An, at once, lighter and more sophisticated tone (the 1970s one seemed fit for 8-9 year-olds). A better lead (Kenneth More, while I'm sure was/is a perfectly nice guy, irritated me in his role; maybe it was him or maybe it was the character as scripted, I dunno). A better supporting cast of characters too.

This is a good show.

I'm probably in a minority and will be stoned for heresy, but I find actors from his generation - Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud too - to be real hams in their acting.

For anyone who missed this excellent series back in February, good news - it's being repeated on BBC2 starting next Monday at 6.30pm.

Well worth a watch and hopefully good ratings will result in a DVD release at some point in the future.

Delightful wee gem of a show which was wasted, being buried away in an early-afternoon slot when first shown.

Hopefully WPC 56 will also be repeated later this summer.

Indeed. BBC have commissioned a 2nd series to be shown later this year and filming is apparently already underway in The Cotswolds.

Mark Williams's 'Father Brown' renewed for second series by BBC One

The daytime drama starring Mark Williams as the eponymous crime-solving Roman Catholic priest will return for ten more 45-minute episodes later this year.

Based on the stories by GK Chesterton, the series has achieved an average audience of 2.1 million and a 23.5% share.

Filming will begin in the Cotswolds for 14 weeks from Monday, May 27.

Executive producer Will Trotter said: "Father Brown is a successful co-production between BBC Worldwide and BBC Drama Production which has delivered compulsive viewing for BBC One Daytime.

"The series features popular stories set in the Cotswolds country houses which look sensational on screen and it's great to attract actors of the calibre of Mark Williams and Sorcha Cusack back for a second series."

Kate Harwood, Head of Drama, England, added: "Will Trotter's Birmingham team created a little bit of sunlit magic during a wet English summer and we're delighted that the show had such a warm response and a swift recommission.

"How wonderful that the brilliant Mark Williams will get to ride his bicycle into action yet again."

Wonderful news.

Anyway enjoy the repeats everyone and if you haven't already seen Father Brown but love murder mysteries from a bygone age then this will be right up your street.

My friend, you are not alone. Add Ralph Richardson to the list. However, it's not their generation that's too blame; many of their contemporaries made perfectly fine movies. But for some reason these particular stage-bound thesps are lauded as greats when some of their performances have been atrocious.

I heartily recommend a drunk evening watching Michael Caine and Lawrence Olivier in "The Jigsaw Man": my favourite worst movie of all time.

As for Father Brown, this was a great show and always too good for daytime. It's a pity the stations are obsessed with showing series on consecutive days, though. What's wrong with one a week?

As I posted on another thread,

BBC one Daytime was told to improve its daytime output. So it commissions dramas like The Indian Doctor and Father Brown.

Those dramas are very well received, and thus do the job that was intended of them (improving daytime output). So why should they have been first broadcast on a primetime slot, depriving the daytime viewers of better programming? To do so would emphasise that daytime programming is not important, that daytime viewers are not important.

What is important is that the programmes, having fulfilled their initial purpose, are now available for to a wider (and different) audience.

Fair play. Thanks for that.

I suppose it's just that there's so much during peak hours that is far worse.

Have enjoyed watching the repeats again this week.

Regarding a DVD release, I wonder if BBC will perhaps wait and release series 1 and 2 together as a boxset. This has been their policy with many shows in the past such as Silent Witness and Waking The Dead.

Or else they could just be holding off until near the end of the year. The last series of George Gently isn't being released on DVD until September - a full year after being originally broadcast.

Fingers crossed as I would love this on DVD. Last time I checked all the episodes had been uploaded to Youtube but it isn't the same of course and no doubt they will eventually be removed for copyright infringement.

Lady Felicia is a hoot.

I remember being particularly impressed by Jennie Jacques in today's episode, the first time it aired.

Who knew she'd be playing the lead in another daytime drama just a few months later! (And I'm still crossing me fingers we get another series of WPC 56 too).

Another actor from WPC 56 appears later in the series but I don't want to spoil the plot by saying who it is as it's the season finale.

Here's hoping WPC 56 will also be repeated on BBC2 in the 6.30pm timeslot later this year. Well worth a second watch.

Oh yes. Forgot he'd been in it, too. Daft thing is, I've just spent the last ten minutes trying to remember what I'd seen him in!

I can't imagine why Jennie Jacques stuck in mind a little bit more.

Shame this wasn't a complete repeat run in the end... presumably all cos of 15 minutes extra of Tennis last Friday.

Been catching up on this. I liked the period setting and the Father Brown character is well played. However the plotlines have been pretty much rubbish. Well actually they're abysmal, sort of 21st century imagining of what life might have been like then but way off the mark.
