I'm not going to complain that i find a hard game difficult but when does challenge get replaced with cheap

I love Devil May Cry games because they have so many difficulties and no matter which one you play on it never feels cheap, it always feels like you need to improve and can always tell when you made the mistake

But what a stark contrast Ninja Gaiden 3 is boss battles just feel so cheap, any time i dodge and the enemy just reappears behind me and instantly uses an unblockable move to take 1/3 of my health, what am i supposed to take from that, i dodged so i avoided previous only to be met with an unavoidable one, there really is no other way to describe that but cheap

I can't comment on whether demon/dark souls is difficult or cheap and ninja gaiden is part of the reason why, on an easy difficulty it's incredibly fun but on a higher one well i've covered that, my main fear about demon/dark souls is that it will be the cheap type of hard

The hardest games in the world are QWOP and Winnie the Pooh's Home Run Derby. They are both free.

I thought Spec Ops: The Line was cheap on FUBAR difficulty when it kills you in a cutscene (the cutscene is at a checkpoint) which then sends you into an infinite loop of reloading the cutscene only to watch yourself die over and over and over unless you skip it.

I haven't played NG3 yet but some of the enemies in NGS2 were annoying. The ones that throw the exploding shurikens/knives got on my nerves as you can't block them. ElizÚbet's 2nd form is also verging on cheap.

Oh my god, really ? that just sounds ridiculous. I mean what is the point ?

The damage is severely ramped up on FUBAR (2 or 3 hits is normally enough to kill from most enemies).

The scene where it happened has you running into a chopper whilst being shot at. Unfortunately the bullets do so much damage that you actually die. The cutscene slows down and fades out. You're then greated with a loading screen and the cutscene starts again... and you die again.

As far as FPSs go, it's not as hard as Killzone 2 on Elite difficulty.

I am finding dark souls very hard, well until I found a walkthrough as I was going the wrong way and would still be going the wrong way now!
But this is supposed to be hard. I bought it because it's hard.
There should be more games that are super hard, so when you finish them you have a sense of pride and not what I experience which is "oh I'll play the next game on my list of unplayed games"

Hard games appeal to my stubborn side (and means I dont take it out on the husband) and this makes games enjoyable for me. The sign of a good game is when you keep playing even though you should be going to work/school/funeral!

Bayonetta - I found that very hard, so hard and frustrating I smashed the disc and case, best part of the game TBH.

That would make me harder to live with, games that I keep dying on and can't make progress with put me in a foul mood.

X-COM: Terror From The Deep is, I'd say, *the* hardest game I've ever played.

But I like the difficulty. I've even started a new game and ramped the difficulty up a bit . I love hard games!

QWOP is really hard, but I did get to the end once, although it was in a ridiculously slow time.

It's probably a technical screwup- they forgot to set an 'invincibility' flag on the player or something when the cutscene rolled around, or the restart point is set for before the cutscene rather than after.

Bit shit that it got through QA, though.

(Incidentally, you could get yourself killed in cutscenes in Goldeneye on the N64, but that didn't interfere with progression)

Creatures on Commodore 64 was really hard to complete back in the day - especially without the cheats!!

I think cheap is what happens when they can't be bothered doing the AI properly to make it more difficult. It's much easier to just program a boss with thousands more hit points or make them do a lot of damage to you, than it is to do things properly and make the AI itself more difficult and intelligent.

XCOM Enemy Unknown is also pretty punishing. I'm playing on easy at the moment and one stupid move or a bit of impatience and it can from looking to horribly wrong in seconds.

But have to say I'm really enjoying the challenge.

You don't know hard until you've played Jagged Alliance 2.

If you like TBS give it a go, you can probably get it for a couple of quid too

It is, and that's just the way I like it! It's challenging, but it doesn't push it too far.

Terror From The Deep, on the other hand, is just cruel. I put it up to 'Experienced', a step up from the easiest difficulty. Within two months, the European Syndicate had withdrawn their funding and left the Council (with no jump in alien activity beforehand, or any sign of a base), and I'd experienced Lobstermen on a sub recovery mission, whilst still having the X-COM version of a slightly-updated pea shooter.

Quite honestly, I'm not sure why I put myself through it. There must be some part of me that really enjoys it.

The final boss in Street Fighter 4 was ridiculously cheap. He could block every attack, teleport like crazy and read your button inputs. The devs came out and admitted they'd made a mistake with him.

Street of Rage 3 was stupidly hard too. For some reason, when they adapted the Japanese version (Bare Knuckle 3), they ramped up the difficulty so that the 'Normal' setting on the US/European versions were significantly more difficult than the Japanese version's Hardest setting. Even the basic enemies zip around the screen and take half your life off with one hit.

The boss fights in Deus Ex Human Revolution were really cheap, particularly the first one where he takes about a million headshots. And if you're on a stealth run and haven't got much weaponry then tough shit. I haven't got the patience so ended up changing the difficulty just to get past him, and even then it took a few more tries. After that I maxed out the Typhoon upgrade thing just to use on bosses. It broke the game, but then again so did their poorly designed bosses. Great game with just that one terrible thing.
