Perhaps Indian restaurant food is so Anglicised, it bears no relation to "Actual" Indian food ?

That's a very sweeping statement. Some are anglicised, lots are very authentic.

Maybe the OP only goes at closing time after a skinfull of cheap lager, when sensible people have already eaten their meal and gone home.

Depends where you go. There are very authentic restaurants to be found.

The people that own a few Chinese takeaways around here are regulars at our local Indian.

Not quite sure what you're saying. Are you denying that British people eat British food at home?

A lot of 'Indian' restaurants are Bangladeshi and not Indian that's why lol.

Manchester has a famous curry mile in Rusholme but I have it on very good authority from Indian and Pakistani work colleagues that the food is 'blanded' down for the English palate. They also use huge catering packs/tins of curry sauce not make them fresh on the premises.
I go to other recommended restaurants where even the mild curries are pretty hot, got used to it over the years

I think it probably depends on the restaurant. I see lots of Indian people in Indian restaurants when I am out and about. I imagine that food is 'westernised' but is that a bad thing? I don't really think that there's any authenticity in food anyway. It's always adapted with ingredients etc. based on where one is.

Come to Leicester, the Melton and Belgrave Road area has dozens of authentic vegetarian Indian restaurants packed with Indians.

As someone already posted your standard Indian is very westernised.

This all depends upon which restaurants in Rusholme you go to. Mughli is pretty authentic which probably explains how busy it is all the time. There's also another place a couple of doors down which regularly has a queue of asian people outside waiting for a table.
Basically look for restaurants that serve food apna style.

And not the one opposite the off license that let you take booze in!

The buffet restaraunt we went too did that and there were groups with water cooler boxes full of booze.

A new restaurant has opened in town that also offer it. Problem is that they are more expensive than our usual and don't offer a Sunday night deal so my cheapskate mates won't go

Thanks for the help.

I pine for the Rusholme of the early 1980's - I was a student nurse at MRI and we used to walk into Rusholme often. My favourites then were the Al-Noor and Shezan (the one that was like a cafe with benches, not the restaurant). Both sadly gone now

The majority of restaurants in Rusholme now are crap - catering for drunk people who fancy a curry.

As jaymmu says though, there are a few exceptions.

Pert of the problem is that we tend to call anywhere that sells curries an Indian, whereas many are Bangladeshi. A bit like calling a Welsh restaurant an English.
