Today I got an email from O2 about TU Go app which allows you to make and receive calls and texts over WiFi. After completing the survey I got offered a trail of the service. As far as I know this so far has been aimed at business users so far on a trail basis.

Looks like they may roll it out to other users later this year. This gets round having to use a Femtocell. The Trail starts on Monday 21st Jan.

I will post on this thread about how I get on with it. Anyone else who has used or is part of the trial post your results on here!

Do you have to pay for the calls/texts?

They come out of your allowance.

I've been following progress of the app for a while. I understood from reading various news websites that it has been trialled for several months and was due to be launched very soon. Maybe they are only starting the trail now??

I registered my interest on http://www.o2.co.uk/tugo/bethefirsttoknow the other day but heard nothing back.

I'd be very interested in trying it out! Keep us updated!

Here is the email I got:

News from O2
Help O2 develop a new mobile app

Hello,

We’ve got a new app that we’d love to get your thoughts on.

TU Go makes your O2 mobile number work on more than just your phone. You can make and receive calls, send and receive texts. All from any supported device using your normal O2 phone number. As long as you have the app, you can contact anyone (even if they don’t have the app too). TU Go is free to download and calls and texts come out of your Pay Monthly bundle as normal.

But before we shout about it we want to see what you think of it. You just need to answer a few questions (it’ll only take 8 minutes), before you have the chance to sign-up to the trial. To say thanks, we’ll also enter you to win one of ten £25 Amazon vouchers, if you do it before midnight on Sunday 20th January.

No I didn't register my interest but knew there was a registration going on as someone had posted about it on the forum recently. The email just came this morning so I was quite surprised.

I've been using Tu Go for a while now and have to say its great!

Not only can you make and receive calls and texts from your mobile, but also from an iPad or PC. I use mine with my iPad quite a lot while out and about.

Is there anyway you can invite others to try it?

That sounds great! Wonder why they are taking so long to launch it? Was talked about in the summer of 2012.Then again it is O2 and they have 2 speeds dead slow and stop

How long have you been testing it?

Since the trial launched. I had O2 Connect before that.

It's a bit different. UMA is hardware based where the handset switches automatically between cellular and wifi. With UMA you can use the standard handset interfaces.

Tu Go is app based so call and texts need to be made through the app. This method has the potential of making it available to a much greater range of handsets than UMA.

The beauty of this is you'll be able to make a call on a tube platform where there's free wifi, or use it to fill in home coverage or anywhere with wifi but no phone signal.

It is indeed very clever, and the good news is Telefonica (who bought the company TuMe) are selling the service / technology wholesale too, so that other networks can use it.

It does seem very good. There appears to be no disadvantages. The only one I can think of, and its not really a big problem at all, is I guess you have to make sure the app is running in the background at all times.
