- The BLONDIE Appreciation Thread -
Okay so today is my first day off from work...and i had a MASSIVE post-Christmas clean out, finding homes for stuff and i decided to put Blondie - Plastic Letters on as i did it...and maaaan talk about 110% Pure gritty NEW WAVE
And i went to discuss it and found there was no Blondie thread...to my knowledge...and sight anyhow. ANyways i hadnt heard a Blondie album in ages so decided to play it and man it sounds so much better with time I think i bought their first 5 albums a few years back spirited by an Ab Fab marathon i had and hadnt listened to them for ages! From 1976 - 1980 they hit a slick 5 year streak of success and Debbie Harry/Deborah Harry (whatever she wants to be known as) became an Icon, drawn to the attention of the media and Andy Warhol.....from her frequent presence at the Studio 54 in that time period....but after Autoamerican, everything seemed to slide for them all...Harrys solo career bar a few gems seemed to fade into oblivion....and Blondie was to be no more....even No Exit onwards hadnt achieved the same pull factor....but regardless....Debbie is now 68 and playing with her band still .Anyways....I personally feel Plastic Letters is my favourite of their albums of that period....all the songs seemlessly flow into each other, there is nothing that sticks out as "filler" like the others i find....while i do very much love Parallel Lines and Eat To The Beat.....Plastic Letters is for me But man its been epic replaying them ![]() So...favourite songs/moments/albums...lets discuss

Another musical artist we have in common, Josh. I love Blondie. My favourite record is Parallel Lines.
They have a recent album called Panic of Girls. It's not as good as their older stuff, but it does have a few good songs and I think it's worth getting if you're a fan. The first half of it is great where they do the classic Blondie new wave/punk/dance type of sound. The single Mother from it is excellent. The second half of it I wasn't too into. It has some reggae and some world music sung in French that is just not my thing at all. I generally only go for dance/electro or rock influenced pop. But if you like those other genres you might enjoy all of it. But it's wonderful that Debbie is still making music. I haven't seem them live but one day I really want to. |

Love it ![]() I do love Blondie and Debbie i do very much love that she had that artistic push a lot like Madonna, grace, Kate and Shirley (Manson) do that i find so appealing. In fact i found it interesting in an interview Debbie did in 2011 to promote that album Panic Of girls, where she was asked "how she felt about Madonna" and that she basically did admit to jealousy because Debbie herself in the 80s got consumed with drug culture and looking after Chris Stein was a drain on her personally...but she admitted that of all the stars (Madonna, Prince, MJ, Springsteen) of the 80s having defining songs and albums where she felt she could/should have done....but looking back she felt that they didnt "fill her shoes" or whatever but instead highlighted that Blondie as a band was never intended for mainstream audiences from their New Wave/underground background and hybrid of fused styles and directions and she loved that compared to them she was more "quiet and behind the scenes"....i very much love that...although Debbie can basically appear like she never has anything nice to say she is rather genuine with it and i love that I must check out that album however, intended to in 2011 but never managed to get back into Blondie really....but i definitely will....wasnt that keen on the album "Curse"...i have just ordered The Hunter to complete my 1976 - 1982 strand of albums before they fissled out....vry much love the sounds on that album! |

I've never really understood the comparisons with Madonna. I don't think Debbie is a bitchy jealous person it's just that the media and some of her fans want to stir things up by asking her about Madonna all the time. She and Madonna couldn't be more different musically, but people like to set them against one another because they are blonde women. The media doesn't set male singer against each other like that.
Debbie has more of a rock sound than Madonna. I think Debbie has been a big influence on women in rock and indie music. There's this band I like called the Joy Formidable who have a new record called Wolf's Law coming out soon who sort of looks like Debbie and is influenced a lot by her musically. If you like Blondie, you should check them out. |

Most likely not.Yeah i have heard of them, i never really latched onto them but i know what you mean in terms of look....I think Madonna because over 30 years she definitely expanded many genres and influenced so many artists and people from different walks of life whereas Debbie is strictly the Rock/Punk movement rather than Pop/Dance/Electronica/Pop Rock blends really....i mean the Ting Tings for example hold both as influences and you can kinda see why too...although i am inpartial to them too ....But yeah i thik unfortunately its down to culture for comparing female artists with one another....they are either great or not tbh...and the great ones get pitted even moreso....regardless i do loves Debbie May buy her Hits album toothat they did when Maria was released to coincide with their reunion in 1999...that has a neat selection...plus the three 80s albums are out of print so it makes sense i love the Koo Koo cover by HR giger from the Alien film designs......nerd w*nk

Oh yes heard End Of The RUn earlier
Love it....it seems like her strongest two sounding albums are on one boxset while Rockbird and Debravation are on the other boxset which i have mixed feels about thus far (still bought however....for completist sake!) Looking forward to hearing...must say from what i have heard of Koo Koo and Def, Dumb & Blonde they do rank with Blondies best IMO definitely. |

God knows how many times I've watched The Best of Blondie (VHS)/Blondie Greatest Video Hits (DVD) all the way through. If any Blondie fans haven't seen it, it's a load of video clips loosely linked together by footage of a new York cab driver on his travels, and I highly recommend it.
They've added a few bonus clips to the DVD version (eg Maria), but it's the main feature that keeps me re-watching. |

I've got all Blondies albums, plus quite a few compilations.
Fantastic band, with one of the all time great lead singers. She has an amazing voice, and can cover many styles. Her vocal qualities tended to getoverlooked in their heyday, because of her looks and image, but she's a great singer. I've seen them quite a lot since they reformed, and have tickets for a forest show this summer. |

Managed to get Parallel Lines on LP and Plastic Letters on tape in a 2nd hand shop - then bought them on CD a few years ago, which reminds me I haven't transferred them onto my iPod yet. I also had a VHS copy of Blondie Live! filmed in 1982 which I watched over and over and over again! I was also able to see them live at the SECC just after Maria was released and they were fabulous! Much as I have always been a huge Madonna fan, personally I was much more influenced by Debbie Harry....I was never a 'Wannabe', but I was desperate to be Debbie Harry, I just loved her voice and her looks. Brilliant band. |
