Hi, I hope someone can help.

I just bought a second-hand Sony STR-DH800 and it works great with my laptop and freesat box connected via the HDMI ports.

However, I'm not able to get any sound through the receiver when I'm watching tv. The Samsung is connected to the receiver correctly (hdmi out on receiver to hdmi in on telly), it has built in freeview, and it's connected up to an aerial in the attic which is probably an old analogue thing. The menu on the receiver suggests that the tv audio is analogue. Is there any way to get sound? Am i missing something? Should the tv be connected to the receiver with a digital optical cable as well? Any help would be great

As far as I can see the Sony does not support Audio Return Channel on the HDMI to the TV. So you cannot get sound back from the TV if the only connection between the two is HDMI. So you need a separate audio lead back from the TV to an input on the Sony.

The TV could well have an optical digital out which you could connect to the "TV" optical input on the Sony.

By the way you don't have an analogue aerial, nor a digital one for that matter. There ain't any such animal. An aerial is an aerial. it could care less what the signals it receives are.

Ah. The TV has a digital optical out connector, so if I hooked a an optical cable from the tv to the sony there'd be a chance that i'd get sound, then?

many thanks on the aerial thing!

A quick look at the manual on the Sony website suggests there is an Optical input on the back of the amp labelled TV which corresponds to the button labelled TV in the top half of the remote.

I have my TV and surround amp connected up like this as neither support Audio return Channel via HDMI. Does the job.

Oh and if you look in the back of a dodgy aerial installers van you'll see a load of absolutely identical aerials. The only difference is the one he tells you is digital costs 50 quid more than the exact same one that he tells you is analogue.

You will of course be buying one of these won't you

because you are a person who seeks the very best quality from your system. Oh and have had your brain removed and replaced by something with less power than an old Sinclair ZX80

But there must be brain dead idiots who will pay silly money for that kind of stuff.

Just as there are people who would spend 3 grand on a mains lead!
