Actually the show was recommissioned while they were still filming the first series months before it was transmitted. Highly unnusual, but by the time the final ep was written they already knew there'd be a second series.
When was that said? i follow the actress on twitter and she said they found out that day! i.e when we did

I'm very late to the party, but I started watching the series in March and I've just finished! Wow, that was really great I really loved it

I'm confused about the ending though, can anyone tell me what did Kester mean by it was time to start therapy? Hasn't she been in therapy with him? I didn't get why she just laughed at that.

I was scanning the thread and I have to side with the people who don't want that twist. Why would her mum send her to a counsellor who is secretly her dad? That would be so evil. And he doesn't seem the type to abandon a child. I wouldn't buy it.

Have to also say that, since the whole series was mainly about her weight issues and self-esteem, I wasn't expecting for there to be such an emotional focus on her not knowing her dad in the last episode so it caught me off-guard and I found it emotional, as it's a subject close to my heart. The "It's not right to do that to a 7 year old" speech really got to me .

Can't wait for series 2, seems like a very long time away though!

ETA: I was wondering if there would be a twist with the woman who lives across from Rae. Perhaps her son is Rae's dad or something, she seemed very upset when Rae 'died'.

I would recommend reading the book. Then you will see that none of these theories about Rae's dad are remotely plausible. Remember that it is factually based, rather than being a totally invented drama.

I know that the show is based on the book, but they really don't have to stick to it as that's not what the entire show is about.

Anyone have an answer for the final line question?

I would rather not have unrealistic twists just to satisfy a biological dad storyline.

I loved the show, I'm five years younger than Rae, but remembered so much from reading her book and watching the series. I'm also harbouring a mild crush on Finn, he looks a bit like a young Ian Brown who was my big 90s obsession!

I don't see why he and Rae can't get together. If the only 'obstacle' was her weight I would find that quite distasteful. In TV shows we're expected to believe in vampires, angels, etc, how sad would it be if a fat girl and slim guy being in love was just too fantastical for audiences to cope with?

I just had the need to come back to this after starting to read the book again. I thought some people might be interested in this podcast with Rae, especially as it demonstrates the Stamford accent quite well, even if it has now acquired just a very faintly detectable Australian twang.

Scroll down to about half way but be prepared - it's very long.

There's also an interview here covering some of the same ground. Some people might appreciate the link to her playlist.

Just watched the whole series on 4OD. Loved the soundtrack as I was 16 in 1996 and had a long summer off before College so bring back loads of memories.
As the for show I loved it also. Very witty dialogue and a great cast. Really felt like it was 96 with no mention of mobile phones or the internet which of cause were around but very few people would have them and certainly not teenagers from that demographic.

That's really weird that this thread got bumped, I was going to ask, does anyone know where I could watch/ download this series with Swedish subtitles? I know it's a bit niche! Or maybe, where I could download subtitles and get them working and synched with say, VLC player?
