How to recover free space in Windows 7

I have just lost a lot of free space in Windows 7, which is odd since I have taken stuff off. What is happening ? How can I get my free space back ?

Just the usual. Remove any programmes that are not needed. Do a defrag and disc cleanup, remove all restore points except for the last one. I usually run CCleaner every few days - that frees up space.

When I take something out, it actually loses free space.
