Why is James Arthur's single holding up better than previous winner singles?

On today's chart show it will be announced that James is still in the top 10 in his sixth week in the chart (He was #6 in the midweeks, and has been #7 on iTunes for the last few days).

Other winners in their sixth week
Shayne: 6
Alexandra: 11
Leona: 12
Matt: 20
Leon: 27
Steve: 27
Joe: 38
Little Mix: 40

Only Shayne is able to rival his chart run.

Actually there's quite a number of singles that hang around in the charts these days, in my day it was different!

Although I prefer the original version, James does a good version of what is a good song. It will be interesting to see what happens with the next single, especially if it is an original work.

This, the original version wasn't as successful and to some this song is completely new so more will purchace it - it's a great track but I too prefer the original. I reckon had James released something along the lines of Bohemian Rhapsody it would have been out after three or four weeks later.

Now he has the trouble of living up to this with his next single

I'm sure the record label are not expecting his first original single to sell as well as this. Selling half of Impossible in 6 weeks would actually put him in the top 10 of the best selling singles of the year.

There has been very little out in the way of releases (let alone significant releases) this January, so there have been a lot of records still hanging around from before Xmas.

You mean 2012? Its pretty impressive to get into the best sellers of 2013 when it hasnt really begun yet

What on earth are you on about?
Read my post again, and the post I quoted.

If you've followed the charts in the last few years, you will know that selling 500k in 6 weeks will easily put you in the top 10 of the best selling singles of the year.

The song I think

First in a while not to be criticised, original not a known classic

I really don't understand why since it's the worst winners single in history in my opinion.

Just because the original version isn't as well known doesn't make James' version any more original

It's also doing very well internationally....with very little to no radio airplay.

Not really, charity singles are usually out of the top 75 by now. Look at that Hillsborough one.

Because it has more commercial appeal than previous winners singles. It doesn't sound like a typical XF winner's song imo.

I wasn't that fussed on the song at first despite being a big fan of James during the show. But after hearing it on the radio, I love his version now and bought it last week. I think the song's a grower and may appeal to people who haven't been following the show.
