They'd already split in 2009. A bunch of concerts, a Greatest Hits and a couple of singles is nothing.

It's sad news but probably the right time. Ten years (less the recent gap) is an amazing run and roughly equal to Boyzone and Westlife, who equally decided enough was enough.

Although most of their Xenomania productions are awesome (and Love Machine, at least, is an all time noughties classic and will be played at retro club nights for decades to come), pop has moved on and I would hate having to see them conform to the generic Guetta-dance or faux-dubstep template, complete with compulsory guest US rapper (see The Saturdays), that seems to be the only genre of music getting attention these days.

Thanks for the amazing albums, the fantastic tours and ten years of happy memories of one of Britain's great pop bands. I'll miss the girls together but look forward to seeing what (likely very different) paths each will follow next.

Supported them every step of the way, so proud of them.

No other girl group will EVER come close.

I am not surprised the have split since reforming in October every single thing they have done has been underwhelming,

An underwhelming second greatest hits with a bonus disc of tracks most fans already have.

An underwhelming comeback song that despite all the publicity & exposure failed to make it to #1 and had a short chart run.

The greatest hits also had an underwhelming chart run and has ruined their run of platinum selling albums.

God only knows what that second single release was all about it only scraped the Top 100.

Their enthusiasm just didn't see to be there especially from Nicola Roberts.

They imo should have split up afte Untouchable.

Saw this coming, as did everyone.

Really wished they released On The Metro or Every Now and Then as their final single instead of the Beautiful Cause You Love Me crap.
On The Metro would have been good as it fits in with the underground theme. And yes BCYLM was complete crap. It wasn't a Girls Aloud song at all.

Gutted

If they want to split then fair enough, but they should have done it properly. They should have announced from the beginning it would be a farewell tour. They should have ended their singles run with Every Now And Then rather than Beautiful 'Cause You Love. They shouldn't have said Girls Aloud would never split. They should have released a CD of unreleased songs for the fans. They should have announced the split properly rather than on Twitter...
Are there unreleased GA songs? I must have a look.

Now i am looking forward to who will be the next generation's girlbands. So far we have Little Mix.
I think Little Mix and The Saturdays if they get their first No 1 on Sunday will take over, but tbh The Saturdays should have taken over in 2009 after GA released Untouchable.

This tweet is a rather glaring admission that GA was all Nadine had !!!

At least the others have diversified and gone into different things, and have plans and goals, and probably have good futures lined up for themselves

Nadine (ironically the best singer !!) pissed off to the States, therefore abandoning her core audience, did bugger all... and now that's she has enjoyed a taste of the good life on stage again, wants it all to go on.

What?

She moved there with her family and opened a bar and has largely kept her head down and "got on" with things. So what if she loves performing and wants it to go on? It just shows she is passionate about singing/performing and she appreciates it. At least she doesn't look like a nervous dear in the headlights everytime she has to sing like a certain other supposed "singer" in the band.

Songs like Biology, Call The Shots and Untouchable are awesome. One thing I can say about Girls Aloud is that they never had to resort to rent-a-rapper or following trends to sell music. They found a sound (i.e. pop with dance influences in some songs) that suited them and stuck to it. They even stuck to pop during the era when indie/boys with guitars type music dominated the charts.

Watching their concert on YouTube and two things made me uncomfortable.

1 - During 'I'll Stand By You', Nicola (who was standing next to Nadine) runs to the other side of the group and merges between Cheryl and Kimberly for a hug and leaves Nadine standing alone.

2 - During 'Something New' Nadine stretches out her hand for Cheryl to high five and Cheryl completely blanks her and Nadine looks quite down about it.

That's a load of bitter, twisted nonsense. You obviously don't like Nadine as an individual, but what a depth you had to mine there to criticise her. Going to the US? Taking it easy? Getting on with her life while the group was in hiatus? Eh? Is it your bad week or something?

They said they were taking a year break, but that ended up lasting 3 years before this reunion. They never actually split, but fans were kept waiting a very long time.

I've followed them since 2003 when I was 11. I wasn't quite sure who they were at first, as I didn't watch Popstars: The Rivals, but I first got into them when I heard Life Got Cold.

I agree with people who've said they should have split up properly after Out Of Control when they were on a high from The Promise and the #1 album.

I'm glad they didn't, I really enjoyed the Ten tour.

I think that's down to the media portrayal of Nadine as the bitch in the band.

When she's performing with the girls, it's obvious she likes them but the media emphasing things like her not turning up to the BRITs in 2008 or not supporting Cheryl through the Malaria/Divorce situations makes people think she doesnt.. I've found this time around the other girls (Cheryl, Kim and Nicola) to be quite cold towards Nadine, in the situations a poster has made above.

I can believe Nadine wants the group to continue, she really looked like she enjoyed it this time but to come out less than 24 hours after to say she doesn't want it to end and practically blame the other girls probably wasn't the wisest move

They were the only act that kept me interested in the charts during this (for me, quite boring) time in music. I loved how they stuck to their own sound. Also loved how when they released a new single my first reaction would be " that's not catchy, I hate it!!!" Then after a few listens I 'got it' and loved every one of the singles they released (I haven't heart BCYLM).

Pointless side note: does anyone else get peed off at the end of "No Good Advice" when you just KNOW that the last line should be "cos frankly I don't give a damn!"??
