My wife came back from shop this morning with a load of blocks of butter that are near use by date.

So wanted to know can they be put in the freezer?

ive never done that before so wanted to check before we did.

Yes. I've bought butter in bulk and frozen it. It's just like normal butter after thawing out.
I've frozen eggs too (accidentally), and that doesn't seem to do them any harm either.

Butter lasts for months in the fridge. Are they best before or use by dates.

You're right about the butter & tubs of Flora etc are fine. But I thought you could only successfully freeze egg 'whites'? Hope I'm wrong as it would be useful if you could do both as some recipes call for extra yolk or whites at times.

Butter freezes well but will keep in the fridge for weeks after the best before date, you can easily smell see when it goes off.

Eggs I have accidentally frozen before and they all broke all they were able to be used for was baking and scrambled eggs.

Tbh mollie - I'd do that for scrambled/ omelettes etc.

Yes, my mum use to freeze butter all of the time. We get through too much so never need to. Milk freezes too. My MIL uses that digusting long life stuff whenever she runs out of milk and although I've told her to freeze some she refuses to accept it. Only thing is you can't hurry the defrosting process.

I well remember frozen milk when I was a nipper. In the winter it would often freeze on the doorstep and you had to dig out a plug of ice before you could pour it on your cornflakes in the morning.

One of my abiding memories of winter 1963 was school milk. Brought in completely frozen and left by the radiator to defrost so it became warm. Kids were being ill all over the place! You really shouldn't try to hurry the defrosting process.

I used to regulary freeze butter

FIRSTLY ~I would cut the block in half down the centre
[long ways ]

then using a very sharp hot knife [dunked into a mug of boiling water ]
cut each oblong into [2mm?] thinnish slices all along
~letting each slice ~become slightly set apart
then do the same with the other oblong of butter
then place them flat ~in the freezer~~in a bag

then I would easily remove one slice at a time~
~~ whenever I need one
for toast sanis frying etc
