Suppose. Hope all this media guff doesn't blur what the Xbox is really about - games, I don't mind a console being able to do other jobs besides games. Just hope MS don't become preoccupied with this ultimate home media hub idea. It won't wash with the majority of gamers.

Would that be to turn it into a PVR? Maybe it will be for recording gameplay without using an external device? Or is that not really possible?

PVR is most likely, don't see why you couldn't record gameplay if you could output the signal back to the Xbox. I never thought of that particular use for it, that would actually be quite good if its possible.

I'm not sure how much use HDMI-in would be. Many HDMI devices have HDCP (copy protection), which would not allow recording.

All it would be is an HDMI pass through.
Perhaps at most an attempt to do switching between sources with one remote. Don't expect anything more. |

A slim-line drive-less 720 is what you'll get in 2015-2017. Cloud gaming from then on. Doesn't make sense to do it that way. You would simply write the output to disk, no point outputting it then inputting it then writing the input of the output. |

A way for Microsoft to encourage customers to use both machines side-by-side, rather than ditching the 360? A backwards compatability solution, like a Master-Slave configuration? |

You still have to turn the 360 on, why run two machines at the same time? |

I've had situations in the past while capturing video on my PC where using other CPU heavy programs has affected the video capture. Also had situations in the past while recording gameplay has caused performance drops in the gameplay due to reading the game data & recording the video to the same Hard drive (Hence why I record video to another drive now). Pretty much everything that outputs HDMI features HDCP which makes it impossible to record anything without having to buy external kits to try & strip the HDCP from the signal (The HDFury2 for example). I agree, Believe there are some Bluray players & HD satellite/cable receivers which come with HDMI-In purely to work as a pass-thru to avoid the need for splitters for those without additional free HDMI ports on there TV. |

I would be very surprised if this feature makes it onto an actual retail release console, it is one of those 'nice but not essential' features that I can see being dropped in the interests of getting the cheapest possible launch price. A similar thing happened with the PS3 before it launched, it was to have two HDMI out sockets (possibly for multi screen gaming?) but the feature was dropped in the interests of cost (and it still launched at a stupid price).
If it did make it through (unlikely) then I expect it would be pass through only as I think MS would find themselves in legal hot water if they had the console decrypt the HDCP, which they would have to for it to be any use for recording from other devices like set top boxes. |
