Smoked Mackerel

got a bit from the fresh fish counter at Sainsbury's last night, as they were selling it off.

I thought it would be ready to eat as it was smoked - but it was more like a kipper, and still needed cooking. I didn't realise smoked mackerel had to be cooked

Really nice though, after 10mins on the grill.

I love mackerel but it's recently joined the list of fish we're not supposed to eat very often. Some sort of fishing dispute I think. At this rate we'll be left with snoek and jellyfish.

As above, just don't get to like it too much.

Dispute means mackerel is no longer catch of the day

Quote:
“The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has downgraded mackerel from its list of fish suitable to eat.

The society says that international arguments about quotas mean it is no longer a sustainable choice.

It says that mackerel should now be eaten only occasionally and consumers should instead eat herrings or sardines.”

Oh me too, so long as they're not too vinegary. Supermarket ones are not so good.

I catch and cold smoke my own mackerel with applewood chippings, certainly no shortage of fish that I can see.

I live not too far from a fish market and can get really nice ones from there. Making my mouth water thinking about it.

Line caught and inshore are fine. Its the deep sea hoover factory ships that are the problem.

Grilled smoked mackerel is absolutely deeelicious and I'm amazed it is now no longer on the 'sustainable' list. It was only just being promoted as such.

Indeed, the factory ships are a massive problem. a russian ship lifted hundreds of tonnes of mackerel and god knows what else from Belfast lough last year leaving people very worried about fish stocks for the future. I catch what I need by line and return the smaller fish since I use barbless hooks which are pretty harmless to the returned fish, I find the fresh caught mackerel are much superior to the shop bought fish in general.

I don't cook my smoked mackerel, I just eat it cold with a beetroot and watercress salad and some new potatoes.

If it's now on the danger list I may have to find an alternative, but there is nothing quite so delicious.
