It's the week ending the 12/12/99 not the week commecing, where the ratings are from. Hence, as the Champs League game was shown on a Wednesday, according to you, it must have been the Man Utd game.

Like Mrs Brown, Dinnerladies had a Saturday night repeat - in the same exact slot before the news and MOTD. That was the third series of Creek which would carry on over Christmas, I think it got its highest ever ratings over the festive season. You always forget how big They Think It's All Over was, earlier that year that and Frank Skinner had got huge audiences opposite the first episodes of Tonight. Thursday was always the traditional night for BBC1 comedy in those days.

At that point TOTP2 was beating TOTP1, though again that's based on two showings. It was on all year round as well. Record of the Year was a big show in those days, that was the second one they did.

Well, the 1995 Christmas show was on Christmas Eve, but I wonder if it might be the 1996 special which was on Boxing Day right before the One Foot special (Andrew Marshall and David Renwick back together again), although that came off the back of the bog-standard 1996 run.

Playing in the same 7.30 timeslt as My Kitchen Rules, Masterchef failed to even get half of MKR's ratings with just 729,000 viewers. Even more embarassingly a Qi repeat at 8.00pm on ABC came just 4,000 away from beating it.

Nine are still playing Big Bang Repeats at 7pm this week, but the Block All Stars begins on Monday which is likely to affect Masterchef's viewership even more. Quite how well The Block will do next week remains to be seen as its not an ordinary series. I suspect MKR will win the reality battle”

What happened to master chef in Australia? I thought it was there biggest show by miles? I love there version!!

Wow. Viewers really hate the Dallas reboot, both here and in the US.

Only 819k (3.4%) turned out for the season premiere last night in the UK. It was beaten by the programmes either side of it, as Benidorm ER drew 1.17m (5.0%) at 8pm and the excellent new documentary series Brain Hospital managed a decent 884k (5.3%) at 10pm.

Doesn't mean people hate it. I don't watch it but I'm sure the series is probably cursed now by the death of JR... For a lot of people he is the show, so that probably doesn't help, even if he is in a few episodes of this series.

Sometimes show's just don't make essential viewing, but that's a sign of indifference, or audience apathy, not hate. Hate is a very extreme reaction.

Hate in my book is reserved for anything with Simon Cowell in it, for example

Depressing rating for Dallas on both sides of the pond as I think it's really good. Good to see Death In Paradise continue to do well though.

Can I ask what David Attenborough's new show Natural Curiosities got at 8pm last night on Eden? How does this compare to usual for the channel? Thanks in advance

Over exposure

The first series I believe ran 3 or 4 nights a week, and cooking in primetime was a relatively new concept

Since then Seven have launched My Kitchen Rules, a variation on Come Dine With Me but with just 12 couples across a whole series and a huge prize at the end.

Since last May Masterchef has run a normal series, an all stars series and now a professional series. Its pretty much on at 7.30pm all year round, except for when Biggest Loser is on

The low Dallas figures are really unfortunate. It actually is a very good reboot of the series, mixing many familiar faces and situations from the old glory days with a largely new and young cast. But on both sides of the Atlantic it has clearly not clicked with a large enough audience.

Five must be deeply unhappy - they promoted it hard last year, gave the first season a rerun over Christmas, brought forward this second season to almost coincide with the US run, and scheduled it on a Tuesday at 9 when ITV's opposition is almost non-existent - and then get peaktime ratings barely higher than those of Neighbours.

With these sorts of figures, it must be probable that if (which itself seems unlikely) the US make a third season Five will not buy it.

If Dallas was on Channel 4 they would be making arrangements to show it at 5 past midnight by now.

Yep they did surreal well - there was that episode where Belinda Lang and friend ended up in Shirley Bassey's clothes warehouse trying on all her outfits while Gary Olsen was trapped in Portmerion at a Prisoner convention!

Belinda Lang was great in 2.4 Children - quite a departure from her usual roles which tended to be posh and sexy. She was in the ITV sitcom Second Thoughts at the same time playing the vamp ex wife of James Bolans character. You don't see her on TV much these days - still does a lot of stage work though.

I too am very disappointed with how dallas is doing I LOVE LOVE LOVE it, my favourite new show for years!!!

the only theory I can come to is that the old viewers from 20/30 yrs ago now find the show too modern and the younger potential viewers have the impression that Dallas is an old fashioned style show for old peeps that they would not like, where in fact in is a very modern, slick, dynamic show.

if ratings don't improve soon it could get pushed back to a later slot maybe 10pm or 11pm or moved to 5* or 5usa

a 3rd series is possible as the show is being sold all over the world at the moment, but if it tanks in all those countries who knows

Pretty much sums up my feeling on the subject.

In trying so hard to appeal to both new and old viewers, it's been unable to convince either.

My Kithcen Rules, is SO much better than Masterchef. Really entertaining and a really varied format, it's only like come dine with me for the first elimination, then it's loads of different types of challenges and the hosts are adorable.

I think Masterchef Australia has suffered from overly long series and from really annoying contestants. The second series was fantastic, but I think where its gone down hill is that due to the team challenges, really poor contestants can coast for weeks without being tested. The last few series have felt rigged to keep certain constestants in.

These were the exact reasons I cited for the show to bomb when it was re-hased. But it did OK for a while, much better than I expected, it's very hard to re-create a classic from another era and to expect people to connect to it in the same way.
In the 80's people were fascianted by the lifestyles of these oiltycoons, it was SO glmaorous compared to ordinary peoples lives. Now we've seen hundreds of these types of shows, it does not have the same draw.

Something not quite right there, but either way ITV come out of it terribly poorly. Great Houses is simply not good enough for primetime ITV, and a Millionaire repeat is pathetic. It would probably hardly be any more expensive to make a new one. It's all very well saying ITV needn't bother on Tuesday but BBC1 is not unbeatable. Why can't they do better opposite Holby City when it's only getting five million viewers? They do alright on Mondays and Sundays against far greater competition.

Good figure for Welsh Railways on BBC2 considering it started as a BBC Wales opt-out.A lot of these local programmes, particularly from the national regions, are obviously worth a BBC2 airing.
