Forgot to say 4G customers seem to get priority on 3G over Orange and TMUK customers with data. Could be just the EE APN seeing less traffic but I get much faster speeds than friends on the same phone model, same location with them on the same mast. Even more noticeable at peak......

I'm pretty sure it does being a 3G technology. I guess they might later once there's 80% or so coverage and they can get a better idea of the 2G/LTE variation when the network is under load (assuming (but not stating) it does breath).

The biggest issue for EE is not price - it's that the technology has yet to find a purpose that folks want to pay for.

I work in a tekkie type business and nobody is talking about 4G. They talk about new smartphones and tablets but not about LTE because as yet there is no particular need for it.

O2's CEO made the point that LTE technology will not in itself be a big attraction until there are services that can be delivered that make it of value to consumers.

3G was not a success until the Internet became mainstream on smartphones, 4G won't justify a price premium until something new makes it worth paying extra for. (The networks may have to price it more realistically as they run out of 3G bandwidth in the future).

Bottom line is that EE have not really done anything to encourage uptake of LTE with their data limits and high pricing policy to date.

As others have said they are the only operator with 4G at the moment. It seems to have gone well in the US, lots of customers are upgrading to 4G.

It will mean file downloads, app downloads (especially bigger apps) and dropbox uploads, cloud sync etc will be faster. It also means streams start quicker and are more reliable.

It doesn't suffer from cell breathing as much and it should give more consistently fast speeds and wider coverage eventually.

Just crunched out a few tests, I normally get 10-12mb at home so assume some issue with 3 tonight

For iPhone users, it's a shame Apple still have that ridiculous, draconian limit on downloads from the App Store when not using wifi. What is it, 50MB? It's terrible anyway. Even an acknowledgment screen for every 'large' download, or an option in the settings, would be better than an outright block.

I think a lot of it comes down to the networks in the US, especially AT&T. They have only recently started allowing Facetime over 4G and now 3G. It is easier for Apple to make the limits and restrictions universal so they can tell customers the limit is 50MB rather than have different limits depending on the country and network.

Its different with Android as there is no real relationship between Google and the networks.

I've never understood the app size limit.. As Apple have a closer relationship with the networks I think it's that. Google is against limits so they'd never do it whatever the Networks asked for. Apple gets a cut of the plan cash so carriers maybe can ask for certain restrictions.. Seeing they kept back FaceTime over cellular for so long it's the best guess.

I would agree though that the 50 meg limit needs raising a bit. But for the average user with a 500 meg allowance and no idea what a megabyte is, it's a good thing and that's why Apple do it. Google don't give a toss if your bill is £200 quid coz you went over your limit. Why? Because the guy in the street doesn't even know his phone's running Android and even if he did he wouldn't know Google was behind it. I know this becoase I deal with the general public on a daily basis and most of them struggle with the term "smartphone".
What needs to happen is all networks need to adopt the Three/EE4G/T-Mobile way of doing data. When you run out, the connection stops until you buy some more. It should be the law. Then the 50 meg limit could be removed completely because people would know where they were and wouldn't get shafted for extra charges. it would also make users more aware of how much data they have and how it get used with different services.
Is that a fair comeback?

Agreed Devon. Having worked in the mobile industry several times.. The majority are not like folk on here. We are the minority, a small minority.

There is nothing that my iPhone doesn't do that I need it to do due to Apples 'closed' approach.
Then there is jail breaking. My old 4S is jailbroken only for two apps which are specific to network and cellular analysis... I dont need them and its uber geeky that i use them. Funnily enough these two apps are not available on Android!

Age restrictions on app purchasing and Safari can be disabled. Boo-ya

God, thank you. Got me out of a spot. Yes, of course. EE (and I suspect all other networks) restrict adult content by default. You have to specifically remove it and luckily my kids don't know my EE login. That would clearly be stupid!
And of course for WiFi and cellular you can restrict content within iOS.

You were right, I was wrong. No LTE does not breath like 3G.
Got my lines crossed there. Unlike 3G, LTE uses OFDM and assigns each handset an individual sub-carrier. This means that LTE coverage is not effected by more users joining a cell.

This is great though and backs up your findings where LTE coverage mirrors 2G. Can't wait to get it down here.

One thing that screws with cellular is geography. Down here its very hilly. This sometimes helps plan a network and sometimes hinders but the main problem is nearly every single Village is in a valley. Obviously for shelter. There are about 8 villages where I go to sort customers PC probs and I don't think any one of them has 3G outside. But, they do have usable 2G.
It's so bloody annoying when you jump in your car, go to look up Maps and find you're on 2G (mostly GPRS) now my sim sticks to TM cells like ***t to a blanket.

This is why I have been banging on about the coverage rather then speed for the last year.

Locking people into 2 year contracts should be banned IMO, but then charging silly money for the service on top, criminal..... It's nice to have a faster speed I suppose, but, I doubt it's essential for most people.
I don't really care who is offering the product, I'll wait until the prices drop to sensible levels for sensible people........
