So, my Samsung Galaxy Nexus has officially died (a story for another thread) and i'm forced to get a new phone. The obvious choice is the Galaxy 3, however i've been thinking about going for one of the over sized, tablet style phones instead. I use my phone at home all the time whilst my laptop is plugged into the tv so it would be good to have a bigger screen to view things on.

My question is simple, what are the best tablet sized phones on the market at the moment? I'm pretty much fixed on Android now but I might consider another OS if it was good enough.

Also, is it worth my while waiting for new releases this year?

Cheers

I have the Galaxy Nexus but my kids both have the LG Nexus 4. The Nexus 4 is VERY fast and if I was updating now thats what I would go for ....... the only issue is getting hold of one

If you were looking 'bigger' then I'd suggest the Note 2 would be a good starting point .....

The rumoured Motorola x Phone might be worth holding on for though ......

Note 2 for me is the sensible choice in the phablet market

Not sure what your stance on Chinese Android phones is but I've seen some that go up to 6" in screen size. My phone isn't a 'phablet' but I did import it from China via eBay and it's one of the fastest and smoothest phones I've had.

If you'd rather buy a well known brand I'm sure someone can give you advice as I don't know much about bigger phones.

I have a Note 2 and it is hands down the best phone on the market right now, I am blown away by it! Only if you can handle the massive size though.

"Dodgy Fact Alert"

"Dodgy Fact Alert"

it is NOT the best phone on the market right now regardless of which way your hands are facing. It might be best for YOU but no phone is the best for everybody

I recently upgraded my Galaxy Nexus for a Nexus 4. Really happy. Personally coming from someone who has had Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus and a few other devices in between, I wouldn't really want to switch away from Nexus again.

Define 'tablet sized' - because any of Samsung's 3G tablets can call and text, even the 10" models.

If the "phablet" comes with headphone/microphone - I suggest plugging and using that!
Then either leave it in your pocket or hold it in both hands as if you were making a video call!

Dom Jolly's massive mobile sketch doesn't look so funny now. The world has officially gone mad when someone is actually using a Note 2 as their everyday mobile lol.

I dont have a Note/Note2 but is it actually any worse than the 90's when people were holding teeny-tiny things to their ears and struggling to hit little buttons with big fingers ?

Thanks for the advice so far. I'm thinking that the Note 2 is the way forward.

Currently debating what to do with my contract. I could:

1 - Take out a new 24 month contract with 3 and spread the cost of my existing contract over it.

2 - Pay off my current contract with 3 and take out a new one with them.

3 - Pay off my current contract with 3 and take out one with another company

4 - Buy the phone handset only and continue on my current contract.

If the insurance pays out then i'm tempted with 4 as it's probably the cheapest overall and means I can upgrade again in December if something else takes my fancy

The Galaxy S4 is rumoured to have a 5" screen. Might be worth waiting a couple of months to see.

I still like my iPhone 3GS because it is actually a reasonable size for a phone and usable as a tablet. I also have the Nexus 7 as a portable tablet - its a pretty cheap and effective combination.

It does everything my Nexus 7 does, except on a smaller screen, so you are just playing with semantics.

I got my note 2 yesterday. I love it at the moment - the screen is excellent.

I haven't worked out anything useful to do with the stylus yet but there's plenty of exploring to do yet.

Quick Command - press the button and swipe up with the pen.

That and S-Note, it's a really useful app once you get used to it.

The OP was after a phablet, and you reply with your iphone!? How the hell is that playing with semantics FFS?

I think the HTC J Butterfly will be a very good option for the OP when it comes to Europe. The screen is 5" yet the display is full 1080p with 440ppi, reviewers have been extremely impressed by the display.

The OP just got a Note2, so I suspect they won't be looking any more.

That and the HTC is just one of a number of handsets with near-identical specs, so objectively it's probably no better than others like the Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL.
