I want to get a new, bigger screened Panasonic TV to replace the one I have now. The trouble is, there is nothing wrong with the present one.

The current setup is Sat dish with twin cable running to the Foxsat. Because there is nothing wrong with the old TV, I would like to move the old one upstairs. I am trying to work out exactly what I need to do to achieve my aim. If the old Panny is upstairs and the Humax Box is downstairs, what is the easiest way to get the signal from the box to the TV. Is it indeed possible to use the old TV upstairs without getting another box? If it possible, what would have to be done to watch a separate channel?

The old TV is Freeview, but I am unable to use an aerial.

1. Is is indeed possible to use the old TV upstairs without getting another satellite receiver, but you will not be able to watch a different channel from what is on downstairs. You can run a long video cable upstairs from the Foxsat - either use the SCART socket if you're using HDMI downstairs, or use HDMI if you're using SCART downstairs, or if you want to use the same video signal upstairs as well as downstairs then get a SCART or HDMI splitter/distribution amplifier to duplicate the signal to two TVs. Or instead of a long cable, you could invest in a wireless video or HDMI transmitter.

2. If you want to be able to view a different channel upstairs then you will need another satellite receiver upstairs and a new cable running to it from your dish.

I googled "wireless video or HDMI transmitter" to get afeel for the equipment. I have to say the reviews I read were not good. Do you have any experience of them?

I had a composite video/audio sender (this is what you'd use with a SCART connection) many years ago and it was OK - there are loads of these devices on the market. Can suffer from analogue interference when someone walks in front of it! Devices these days should be better. Google "video sender" for these devices.

I've no experience of HDMI transmitters, they are quite new and very expensive!

I'm in the same position as you. Satellite is my only method of receiving TV, I have a Humax Freesat recorder downstairs on a 32" Panasonic Freesat TV, and a 24" TV upstairs. The upstairs TV would be quite mute if it weren't for the HDMI splitter and the 10m cable going from downstairs to upstairs! I laos have an IR injector/adaptor which send the remote infra-red signals back down the HDMI cable from upstairs to downstairs so I can control the Humax from upstairs. At some I stage I want to upgrade the downstairs TV so when I do I will probably move it upstairs to replace the 24".

If the aim is to have independence from the box downstairs then your only option is a second box to serve the upstairs TV. I assume from your mention of watching a different channel to the downstairs TV that there will be occasions when you will be upstairs watching one channel and other family members downstairs watching something else? If that is the case then two boxes is the only solution.

Otherwise you could be upstairs watching something and someone wanders into the downstairs room and decides they want to watch something else or turns the box off!

Most Video senders use Composite video connection which is the lowest quality source. Plus of course it does not support HD. And they use the same frequencies as WiFi so are subject to all the same problems of interference and signal problems passing through walls and floors that WiFi suffers.

HDMI is an option. Though it may be better to either run a very long HDMI cable (you can get up to 20m cables fairly easily) or run a couple of CAT5e ethernet cables and use HDMI to CAT 5 extender boxes. You would of course need an HDMI splitter to feed the downstairs TV and the extender from the Humax. Which could raise it's own set of problems with HDMI handshaking and HDCP copy protection.

Slapping in a bit of coax from the LNB on the dish to the bedroom might be a more attractive option Though it does mean spending on a second box so not necessarily the cheapest option. Unless you were contemplating running this cable of course

I keep thinking that if I went for another receiver it would have to be a fairly expensive Humax. In reality though, for this exercise, a cheapish HD receiver would do the trick. I would not have the need to record to it or anything other than watch TV.

Am I right in thinking that a cheap receiver with a single cable to my dish would do the job?

For watching a single channel at a time then one cable is all you need. Though some people seem to believe you need two for HD?? Not sure where that myth came from but it's untrue.

So one cable to the dish and a simple receiver only box (with no record capability) would do the job nicely.

Presumably if the OP wants to retain the ability to record two channels at the same time he would need an extra cable from the dish?

Probably getting mixed up with using baluns to create a HDMI link using network cable (cat5/6). You do need two to do this.

The Custom Firmware offers the possibility of viewing recordings on the Foxsat independent of the main user if networked and a suitable networked media player is available at the remote end.
