I ownder what the market place would be for this if they took it to general public.

First Firefox phones revealed by Mozilla and Geeksphone

Mozilla has published details of the first smartphones to be powered by its Firefox operating system.

Two handsets are to be made by a small Spanish firm called Geeksphone and will be targeted at developers ahead of the system's formal launch.

The platform is based on the HTML5 web programming language and is being marketed as offering software writers more "freedom" than alternatives.”

I cant see the big boys ignoring the emerging markets so its not like they wil have that playing field to themselves. One to watch this one.

they would probably sell a few very cheap phones to compete under 100 quid range.

Emerging markets are Google's playground just now, Android is even more dominant in a lot of them than in more established markets.

I very much doubt that the Firefox OS handsets will be able to compete on price with existing Android models.
Even if the OS is free, that doesn't make it any cheaper than Android and the hardware will almost certainly be more expensive - in part because logic dictates that a smaller OEM will struggle to match the economies of scale larger companies benefit from but also experience tells us that Geeksphone's handsets are really over-priced for what they are.

This is going to be another also-ran, like WebOS, Maemo/Meego, Tizen, Ubuntu and Bada.

I can't see it. I think it's too late with Android and Apple.

But then didn't they said TV would never catch on?
