Vodafone GPRS problem - please help!

Hi

Apologies if this has already been covered but I have had a Sharp GX20 now since September and I have never been able to use GPRS with it. Can you use the GPRS facility while on PAYG or is it only available to contract customers? When I try to use it, it comes up with "GPRS is currently unavailable, would I like to use an alternative method" so I say yes and get connected immediately. I have tried changing it to CSD first in the settings but it never makes any difference, it always tries GPRS first. Plus whenever I have clicked no to the alternative method I notice when I check my balance afterwards that it has dropped slightly. Should this happen?

Would be really grateful for anyone's help. I have made sure Vodafone Live is activated and the settings seem fine so why can I not access GPRS?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know about PAYG, but it took a lot of effort to get it working on a contract vodafone. You need to get all the settings on the phone correct, some of which are not so easy to find. Then there are 3 things for vodafone to enable at their end. From memory it was GPRS, WAP and Internet access. These can sometimes take 24 hrs to activate.
Neither the vodafone shop or carphone warehouse seemed to know this, and neither did most of the customer service people I spoke to.
I eventually got it working after about a week of phoning every day when I got through to someone who knew what to do.
BTW, I found it easier to phone vofafone CS from the home phone, so I could alter settings and try it while still talking to CS.
You'll need a notepad and pen to write all the wierd settings down.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply vanyablue. I'll give CS a ring tomorrow and see what they say. In the meantime I have tried googling to see if I can find out any info about GPRS but have had no luck.

Thanks again.

Thanks for that. Where did you find that link? I tried for ages 'googling' and came up with zilch. Like I posted earlier am going to give CS a ring tomorrow and just check it's been activated then hopefully all will be hunky-dorey.

Thanks again.

A big thanks for all who tried to help me with my little problem.

Have sorted it now (fingers crossed) by contacting CS and they have told me that GPRS & piccie messaging will be activated in 48 hours. I could hardly hear the chap on the other end but hopefully all this will now be sorted.

Many thanks again.

Hi again

I would put a piccie in the thread you mentioned but I need to get a data cable to do it with. Anyone know of anywhere cheap where I can get one from? Once I have that then I'll post up a piccie.

Thanks.

I haven't got a cable. What I do is send the picture as a picture message, but instead of sending to another phone, I send it to my own email address, and there it is on the computer. (Note send as picture message, not send as email).
It's a bit of a pain entering the email add. , but you don't need to do it too often.

I used to use a similar principle for sending software to my phone via email attachment.....
