Isn't it time charity shops no longer sold cassettes?
I was amazed the other day when I went in to my local charity shop in my town (Rainham, Kent) to discover a shelf of cassette tapes priced at 50p each.
Alright, I know that many of you are going to say that some older or poorer people like to buy them, but this is a very slim occurance in this day and age. It is now 2013, and cassettes have been dead for nearly a whole decade now... Isn't it time they were all discarded of and charity shops move with the times? |

Although i grew up with tapes (i was born 91) and have lost them all or replaced them with CD's and it has been years since i have seen a tape player so i am inclined to think they are a little obsolete.

I was born in 1994, so I'm a 90s guy too ![]() I owned many cassettes as a child, although I had CDs too. I had a mixture of cassettes and CDs years ago, but I always preferred CDs. I remember back in 2002 when Justin Timberlake's Rock Your Body was released and I went to my local Woolworths to buy the single. They had sold out of the CD so instead I bought the cassette ![]() If I'm honest, I was really happy when I bagged up all of my cassettes and threw them all out! It's a pretty nice feeling to upgrade to CDs

You could say the same about VHS video tapes, but don't some people like to collect cassettes? I was born in 1990 and used to buy a lot of music on tape but all the tapes I had have now been replaced with CDs or iTunes downloads. I still have some of my tapes lying around though but they're just collector's items now.

I can't speak for people who buy cassettes, but as someone who has a lot of interest in retro video games it's nice when you can walk into a shop and still see some to look through instead of having to rely on getting everything online, so I'd assume it's the same for those who collect cassettes.
So if people are still interested in them, then I don't see a problem. If I had my stereo still hooked up I wouldn't be against getting them whenever I saw some going cheap. I always prefer buying physical stuff over digital. |

![]() And yeah I was the same growing up, had a mixture of cassettes and CDs. I had both a personal cassette and CD player (remember those?) but preferred CDs as you could skip songs without having to fast forward or rewind. Tapes were always cheaper though. |

What difference does it make to you OP what charity shops sell to make money? If people are buying them, then why not? A lot of older cars and vans (some only a few years old) still have cassette players in them. My wifes Ka did, until she got rid of it last year. Videos are certainly nearly totally redundant, but there is still a small demand for cassettes, and their are some that have tracks on, not on cds. Substance ( 2 disc or 2 cassette compilation by New Order) has 2 tracks on the tape version, annoyingly not on the cd, including a brilliant instrumental version of one of my fave tracks. So I will always have the tape version around as well as the cd. Dont just dismiss old technology because it has been replaced with something new.

What a ridiculous comment why should they stop selling them people must buy them otherwise they wouldn't stock them. I never bought cassettes as always bought vinyl and still do buy the occasional vinyl. I have over a thousand vinyl and I have no intention of rebuking all of them on cd or mp3 as already have cupboards full of CDs.
I am sure many people born prior to the 90's still have cassette players and turntables and most probably still enjoy the pleasure of many a tune on these formats. My grannie is in her nineties and there is no way she would want to change format at her age she is still quite happy with her cassette player. |

I can only be grateful the internet was invented to allow such fascinating discussions like this to take place.

To be fair, charity shops aren't really with the current times anyway.

Car technology is slow to advance. Many cars still don't have DAB and my current car I've never put a CD into it nor have I ever used the iPod connector (soooo last decade) as I use a flash memory stick or if it's on my phone I can play it through the Bluetooth auto link. In 5 years you'll be asking why charity shops still sell CD's, answer is many cars will still only be sold with a basic CD player. |

Considering how dirt cheap the cost of CDs are now, there's really no point or purpose in using cassettes |

So did I. I often used to get those packs that had both the book and tape in it and I'd read the book while listening to the tape. I did the same with videos. I also used to have tapes of kids songs and even educational tapes you'd get in places like Early Learning Centre.
