... Maybe renting time on a CDN to ship said update?

LG have rolled out a big Universal Update to their entire Uk Smart TV installed base... but in their words, they have 1 or 2 servers to deliver it...

Hence - TVs have taken a hell of a long time to update - or been bricked.. or aborted.

Whoops...

I aborted mine and called them - suggested they get Akamai or equivs arranged ASAP to ship their updates to the end-user.. as they now probably have 10 million smart TVs installed at customer homes...

I thought people would like this one.

I'm waiting for 3 weeks before updating mine...

They used to release updates model by model - but with this step-change and the number of smart TVs now in circulation... someone didn't properly capacity-plan...

Ah! That would explain why it has taken me days to get the 04.20.23 update.

It either wouldn't start or start, get a few % and then stop and reset the TV.

It finally completed two days ago and I have stopped getting the "New update available" nagging message and I can use BBC iPlayer again.

Size to me is not important as I'm on Sky unlimited, but if they ain't sending it or sending is so slow it gives up, then I ain't getting it.

The other annoying point is that they haven't put the new update on their website to get it that way. What is the point in having the old one there?

Makes me glad I still have a standard HD tv which is over 3 years old and still working. Basic menu.

What do these smart tv's do?

Not a lot!

A bit of internet if you like browsing using an onscreen keyboard and moving the mouse to each letter with the TV remote control. (Not for regular PC users - I screamed after a minute)

BBC iPlayer can be useful - but as my TV is hooked up to my HTPC I can do all the player and PC stuff on that connected to a real mouse and keyboard.

It also has lots of premium stuff that they want to sell to you: Apps and Movies mostly. So if you are not that sort, then they are wasted.

It does play things from USB sticks and Hard drives - but again as mine is hooked up to a computer anyway, that kinda negates doing that. What is the point copying it from my PC to another hard drive or stick to play it on the TV when I can just play it from the computer it's already on.

So Smart TV do have some things that some will find useful but not everyone.

I think these smart TVs are a bad idea.

What if the TV is smarter than the user, and sits there judging you for the dross you watch? So then it tries to educate you. But it goes too far. It is brainwashing us. Feeding us propaganda for their benefit. Until one day TVs RULE THE WORLD!!!!!

With my brothers TV (almost the same as mine) I wondered if I could plug a mouse and keyboard in as it has 3 USB sockets and he doesn't have a PC or any PC skills. A long-shot I thought. The manual said nothing about it.

I plugged both in and they were recognised and worked flawlessly. So at least he can now navigate around the screen easier. Why do they not put this important info in their manual?

Went out today and left the TV on to get it, so far it as been on for 4 hours and is at 50%

So now i am downloading it from LG and its 346mb

No wonder it is taking so long

Is the new update up on the site as it wasn't and so that wasn't an option a few days ago?

Fortunately, the TV does resume the download and so like mine will get it all eventually. Mine would download a few % stop and then restart the TV. However one day I tried to upload and it must have been in the mood as it went from 50% to completed in about 5 minutes.

I then check my brother's TV and his had updated without even asking it to.

Let's hope they don't release new updates too often.
