Knorr Recipes by Marco Pierre White
I stumbled across his carbonara recipe on Youtube. Some of the comments are hilarious and absolutely bang on the money. I don't believe for a second he uses Knorr stock cubes in his house, and certainly not to flavor pasta for a carbonara.
![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao9Oi1HPbSk Daniel Kazuhiro Nakirimoto 1 month ago knorr guy: ok marco, we want you to make a spaghetti carbonara marco thinks: where the **** I'll add stock cubes? StyrbjornStarke 1 month ago "You may ask why do i season with stockpot rather than salt, the reason is Money" EclecticDiscus 1 week ago Love Marco BUT You need to realize he sold out to Knorr for $ and these video's are Knorr advertisements. Marco NEVER used Knorr anything at Harvey's for a reason! I'd bet everything I own, he doesn't use it at home either. |

I really don't get the snobbish attitude to stock cubes. And is it so hard to believe Marco uses stock cubes when he cooks at home? I find it more implausible that he spends three hours boiling up fresh stock after a hard days work.
The fact is Marco was extolling the virtues of Worcester sauce, ketchup and Knorr stock cubes in his cooking long before Knorr approached him for an endorsement deal. The other fact is that a stock cube is mainly salt and you'll find that Marco almost exclusively uses stock cube in place of salt, as a paste rub for meat or instead of salt in sauces to provide a kind of 'salt plus' flavour. He rarely if ever uses a stock cube to make stock. So leave him alone I say and go and live in Cuba if advertising affronts you so. |

He also claims the secret ingredient to a good spaghetti bolognese is a Knorr stock cube.
![]() Can you imagine what his Italian mother would say to that? |

Even with a highly diluted stock cube you can usually tell that it is from a cube. |

It seems from this and the earlier 'Stock cubes or home made stock' thread, Knorr Stock pots are doing pretty well. Be prepared for a change soon!

In the Sunday Times he was asked, hand on heart, if he really did use Knorr stock, and he said he really did because it was good. Loads of TV chefs use a cube in their cook books, including Delia and Jamie Oliver. Knorr stock is pretty decent stuff - the bottles of liquid bouillion were excellent.

I'm sorry but I refuse to believe Marco adds a chicken stock cube to his pasta when he's making a carbonara.

I've seen plenty of chefs recommend using stock cubes. They usually say you can get good stock from the supermarket these days but if you can't then a stock cube is fine.

![]() Marco has too much respect both for himself as a chef and also to the cooking industry to advertise that a particular product is good just for money. It's really not his style to be involved in something like that. He cares about his reputation and his honour. He doesn't need to be involved in that. Also we know Marco isn't a cooking snob. As said above he backed the use of worcester sauce & ketchup during the Hells Kitchen series. His argument was if it tastes good, why not? And one final point. During an interview in America for Google where he was talking about his last book, he brought up his use of stock cubes and knorr in particular when talking with a member of the audience. He didn't have to. He didn't even think they had Knorr in America. I'm sure he wasn't paid to say it. It was just a small audience of people there to listen to him talk about his book. So I trust him. That's not say i'd trust every chef with this. Certainly not. He's clearly getting paid, of course he is. But I trust it's to back a product he believes in and has uses for. |

Marco is my favourite celebrity chef out of all of them, for the very reason that he is not a snob about using convenience foods in his recipes. In fact, I remember it being commented on in Hell's Kitchen by some of the contestants that his kitchen is cluttered with bottles, jars and packets, and like someone has already said, his attitude is if it tastes good, then why not! He loves salad cream and uses it for lots of things and also tomato ketchup, and I can't see a problem with it to be honest!
So I believe he would without a qualm use stock cubes/pots, and good luck to him! |
