iOS 6 was more like a +0.1 update (I.e. should have been iOS 5.2).

This update (iOS 6.1) is more like a +0.0.1 update!

The last year of updates have been rubbish. Hopefully iOS 7 brings some exciting new features and a fresh look. Hopefully with Jony Ive in charge now the next few updates will be much more interesting.

These are the apparent changes in iOS 6.1:
  • Larger "Report a Problem" button in Maps
  • New music controls on lock screen when you double-press home button
  • Siri can now purchase movie tickets via Fandango (USA only)
  • LTE now works with several European and American carriers
  • Individual songs can once again be downloaded or deleted when using iTunes Match
  • New, persistent Passbook pass explaining service functionality.

Exactly! There have been more exciting +0.0.1 updates in the iOS 4 and 5 eras than anything iOS 6 has brought!

Sadly, it doesn't add anything significant for users in the UK. It's main purpose seems to be to add support for more LTE carriers around the world (providing they are on a supported band of course).

My guess is that when Jony Ive took control of iOS, anything in the pipeline was put on hold so that they could look at the design and interface. Hopefully iOS 7 will be a big update.

When iOS 7 comes out half the features wont even work on your iPhone 5.

Possibly true! They will always have the odd feature that is exclusive to the latest hardware... Maybe not half, but deffinatly a few. However they are going to find it hard to think of an excuse as to why the iPhone 5 won't be able to handle whatever new feature only the 5S (presumably) will have.

They dont need excuses. They never gave any before when Siri didn't work on iPhone4 even though they bought the company that made it which did work on the iPhone4.

Well they always blame processing power, which of course is bogus really, for example that was one of the reasons apparently they didn't allow wallpapers on the iPhone 3G, how silly.

But with the processing power of the iPhone 5, it will be hard to use that excuse. Also I think the iPhone 4S does everything that the iPhone 5 can do can't it? Obviously the main appeal of the iPhone 5 is the bigger screen, so an exclusive software feature wasn't really needed to boost iPhone 5 sales.

It that true of iOS 6 then? Do half the features not work on the 4S?

Yeah pretty much. AFAIK all the software features were provided on the 4S. The 5 was hardware spec bumps.

I think all the features of the iPhone 5 work on the 4S.

One that I'm not sure about is capturing still pictures during video recording.

Right as in it is an iPhone 5 only feature?

Appears to be, yes. No idea why though. It's not even a very important feature.

That LTE software hold back might well have been to do with those speed issues.
Just maybe it matches the S3 LTE for speed now.

It was more than slightly baffling that they had LTE software that did not work in certain places, even when it actually should.

Now have they updated the hardware to European LTE?

Larger report button - wow
New music controls, it had then before just an extra couple wow
Siti - only US, no improvement here
LTE - no relevance here
Individual songs - could do it before
Some passbook pass

Have Apple run out of steam

Found another odd iPhone 5 only feature I think... Folders can hold 16 apps!

No idea. I abandoned ship after my iPhone 4. Got sick of the features being dropped. I'm not a mug and going to go through it for another 2 years.

I think all OS developers including Windows and Android are probably finding it hard to "invent" new groundbreaking features. I mean what else can they add to the software really?

Like I've said above, Apple are probably saving any new features for iOS 7 so it isn't just another dull update like iOS 6 was.
