Add-on box which allows you to connect TV to the net and watch iPlayer etc

My brother-in-law is a Sky subscriber who has an add-on service which allows him to watch all kinds of on demand TV stations, not just iPlayer. And he swears blind that a friend of his bought a similar box which works in the same way for Freeview, for £20.

I have never heard of this and suspect his mate has his internet through Virgin and uses the Virgin service. But he does swear blind it is Freeview.

Is he talking cobblers or is there really such a box on the market? I use Plus Net and would gladly use such a service if it were available. My son can get iPlayer on is Xbox, but this is said to get the rest of the on demand channels as well.

There is YouView but I would doubt you'll get that for twenty quid. A couple of broadband providers do it as part of a package with a monthly fee. Perhaps that is what he is thinking of?

But I can't think of any box that cheap that does all the on demand services.

I'm completely with you, but he swears blind: £20. He even said that was more or less the only reason his mate went for it as he couldn't otherwise be arsed if it was going to cost.

If you already have Sky then you can now get their on demand service for no extra fee. You can connect your Sky box directly to your router with an ethernet cable, or order a wireless transmitter from them for £21.99.
