Someone is selling theirs and I was wondering if it would work on Virgin and is the box different would I still get the full youview experience?

In short, yes.
And the TalkTalk player and branding would disappear from the menu. As would the BTVision player on a YV from BT box. All YV boxes are fully usable on any ISP's line.

This person that's selling it does realise that they don't actually own a Talk Talk provided Youview recorder until the end of the contract term, usually 18 months?. And given that it only launched a couple of months ago, they are likely to receive a hefty bill from TT if they cancel their broadband/Youview service in the meantime as TT will bill them for the cost of the box itself plus a cancellation fee.

At least with TalkTalk you don't pay extra for YouView, so you can carry on with the BB and phone line and unlimited calls without the TV.
Whether they 'know' if the box is used on a different line, who knows? But they must have made contingency plans for people flogging off £300 PVRs.

Agree apart from the £300 statement.TalkTalk has been pulled up for describing them as being worth this much as they were sold at this price for a few days. With 320GB and a poorer brand name than Humax I would estimate a market price of £180 if sold online or on the high street and that TalkTalk would have paid a third of that price for them.

The cost price of the 320GB Huwie box to TT is £140. I saw that on a TT shares statement detailing their then upcoming YouView roll out. The BT default charge is £199 for the 500GB Humax. So the TT default price is most certainly OTT.

For truly unlimited the £15.50 includes TV now and all 24/7 calls as standard. The only Broadband without TV, is Essentials,that I'm on, which is £6.50 unlimited but has a FUP (it was capped at 40gb per month previously).

If a user, like say your daughter, wants a YV box, I thought they had to sign up for the Plus TV package, for which there is a charge of £15.50 per month over 18 months.

If you want unlimited broadband (without any conditions) you pay £15.50 (plus line rental) and that includes a Youview box.
There are no fully unlimited packages now that don't include YouView by default.
Interesting strategy, as it gets YouView into the house with the hope of people taking OTT packages.

Yes, it's an interesting strategy, particularly as at the end of a users contract, they will have, and own, a fully functional Freeview HD PVR with internet connectivity to take where they will. Nice.

Exactly. My daughter signed up primarily for the BB. The phone and YouView were just a bonus.

I can't imagine that Vestel and the likes of Currys and Argos are happy with this as it must now be impacting on PVR sales. Humax is protected through its supply deal with BT.

No, if the box is used on another broadband line it just reverts to a standard YouView box.
To be honest, as long as the seller continues to pay their broadband for the full duration of the contract then Talk Talk aren't going to be interested what happens to the box. It's only if they cancel before the end of the contract period that they'll get hit with a big bill.
As others have said though, the Huwie box provided by TT isn't in the same quality/price bracket as the Humax box provided by BT and also has a smaller hard disc. Given it's price to TT mentioned earlier, it would probably retail for around £199 if marketed and sold on it's own, so it's second hand price is probably somewhere around £150-£170. I don't know how much TT would bill for the box if the broadband is cancelled though, but given they said in their advertising for a short while that it was worth £300, I wouldn't be surprised if they charged £300 plus a cancellation fee which, can be as much as the remaining monthly charges until the end of the contract period.

If you are tempted, make sure it is fully functioning. There seem to be some duff Huawei boxes out there that are being sold without hard drives as "for spares or repair" on eBay. These appear to not be able to be revived simply by installing a hard drive and it looks from other threads that there has been a batch of dodgy boxes that Talktalk have replaced.
The 320GB HD is a little on the small size, to say the least. Can you order the TTalk TV package to get the benefit of the broadband and their price package and not use the Youview box? I have a 1TB Humax pvr so the TTalk Youbox would be a backward step - what is to stop me ordering the TTalk TV package, disconnect their Youview box and just use my Hummy box via theTV aerial?
I have had the TT box for about nine months now and I have not found the 320Gb disc to be a handicap. If left to its own devices, it deletes the oldest recordings automatically as it fills up. If you need to be more precise than that, it is the work of a couple of minutes to free up a load of room on the disc manually. It should only be limiting if you are so in love with your recordings that you can't bear to be parted from them. Not a philosophy I espouse since everything is repeated multiple times anyway.
Is your Humax a Freeview box? If so, it won't have the YouView chipset in it. So no backwards-scrolling EPG and, as far as I know, no on demand players either.

If you have the Humax YouView PVR then yes, I believe it will work fine.
A friend of mine has one, she is on TT but doesn't have unlimited TV package. The TT menus etc. appear on her box, but she can't access the Talk Talk stuff. She called TT and they said they don't support the Humax, and the only way it would work would be if she changed over to their full package so they would activate the TV side. But they'd send her a Huawei box too so she'd end up with two YouView PVRs. As long as her package included TV the rep told her either box would then work, but they wouldn't help her if the Humax developed problems.
Of course, one rep might tell you one thing and another rep might tell you another so you might want to call them. If they say similar (in that the Humax will work fine as long as you have the TV package included, but they wont support it) then go ahead. Once you've confirmed it all works stick the Huawei in another room or put it on Ebay. They're going for around £60 at the moment.

Well, yes, you could use the Humax but you would not be able to use it to access the TalkTalkTV channels. You can't get those with a Freeview box, you need a YouView box. YouView and Freeview are not the same platform, they just both access the DTT broadcasts.
