It's too difficult to pick just one - I've seen loads of them.
These are the ones that I thought of straight away: The Deer Hunter Come and See Attack Ice Cold in Alex Das Boot Paths of Glory The Pianist Kanal Full Metal Jacket Carve Her Name with Pride. A Town Like Alice. The Thin Red Line A Matter of life and Death Casablanca |

The best war movie isn't a war movie, it's a TV show.
Band Of Brothers. |

Cracking film, with a wonderful central performance from George C. Scott.
The opening scene is one of the most iconic of all 70's cinema. And I'd like to add 'The Hill' to the list of great war films. Sean Connery's finest performance, IMHO. |

Gallipoli
Come and See (probably the most depressing war film I had seen) Paths of Glory Germany Year Zero Fires on the Plain Charlie MoPic (when it first appeared on Channel 4 during the 1990s, it was titled Charlie MoPic, but has variations of the title since then. Like 84C MoPic, 84 Charlie MoPic, 84C20, etc. Confusing!) All Quiet on the Western Front (1930, the Lew Ayres version) The Sun Das Boot The Thin Red Line (for this shallow reason alone: the photography is gorgeous) There was a 1950s film about a bunch of teenagers defending a bridge. I can't remember the title now. Edit: The Bridge.

The Deer Hunter hands down followed by Bridge on The River Kwai.
Yet to watch Apocalypse Now even though I have it on DVD... |

@CBFreak and Johnny Clay.
Could you tell me which version of All Quiet on the Western Front you saw? I think there are two. I've read the book but never seen the film. |

Two of my favourite movies of all time ...
The Pianist The Deer Hunter Also ... Der Untergang (Downfall). Great performance by Bruno Ganz as Hitler. He wasn't nominated for an oscar, which I still find mind boggling. |

I've got both on DVD. The 1930 one is by far the better of the two and I recommend you watch that, but the 1979 remake isn't bad and worth a watch whenever you catch it. Great book, BTW.
